adding arcade quality stick/buttons to retro gaming box

I keep buying these Arcade1up machines to relive my youth playing early 80's games like Dig Dug, Wizard of Wor, Pac-Man, etc. My wife is getting pissed at me because of the space they take up. Often, each one only has 1 or 2 games that I like, and the rest are crap. I think this is on purpose, so you end up buying a dozen of them to get all of the games you enjoyed as a kid.
I have 5 or 6 older LCD computer monitors available, and often find myself thinking of setting up some sort of retro gaming system - something like a Pawky Box. (emuelec) However, I'm not sure if something like that would work with an LCD monitor. The other issue is that I hate wireless controllers, so I was wondering if anyone has successfully set up a quality arcade stick or a stick/buttons with one of these?
I know if I keep buying these Arcade1up systems, my wife will keep getting increasingly annoyed at me. I'm hoping something like this will help me avoid that. Thanks for sharing any experiences you may have had along these lines.
