Found this on tesla motor club...nothing definitive on that thread, but points you in the direction to find some more info.

Can't be your phone unfortunately as wireless CarPlay uses the WiFi radio and it cannot be used for hotspot at the same time. Basically you need another WiFi hotspot that the CarPlay box and your Tesla are both able to connect to. Otherwise your Tesla doesn't have network either.
Does that mean if I use this thing with CarPlay, my car won't be connected to the internet via LTE? I guess that makes sense, because with WiFi connected, the LTE is automatically disabled.
So this means that using this thing will require at least 2 cellular plans right? 1 Phone, 1 hotspot device?

- Pro - Carplay functionality works well as you would find carplay in any other device.
- Pro - You connect car to device through wifi, and phone to device through bluetooth. If you have mobile hotspot you can turn on hotspot for internet. With hotspot on, the vehicles apps will also receive internet. If you have an iphone, you can also set up automation to have your hotspot turn on every time your phone connects to the car (not the T3 device). Note, carplay apps will work without hotspot as it connects to the web through your phone. Hotspot is for vehicle functionality.
- Con - When connected to the device, you lose internet if you pay for premium connectivity. You need to turn off wifi or the device to get premium connectivity This is the reason i rarely use the device. I have full self driving and prefer to have live traffic factored into the navigation. Yes, i used FSD on every drive, even if only for a few minutes to free up my concentration.
- Pro / Con (con in my opinion) - The T3 device has a pretty long range bluetooth receiver, so when I exit the vehicle (parked in my garage) i stay connected, even when I am 3 floors above the garage.
- Con - I suspect this is a browser issue, Tesla browser is very laggy and reduces the user experience of the device. to be fair, i notice my browser having issues loading other pages as well. When using navigation (waze), i notice the tracking is a little behind, this becomes exponential on long trips, a mile or so behind actual location. This can be corrected by refreshing the page on the browser, however it can be misleading if you are looking for your exit.
- Pro - Only device i've seen on the market that allows your to cast your phone to the screen and syncs audio. YOUR PASSENGERS can watch videos while you are driving.
- Con - Phone screen stays on the entire time you are casting.
Loss of premium connective and laggy tesla browser if why i would not recommend. If you do not have FSD or premium connectivity and do not have issues with your browser, i would give it a try. I paid $130 2 months ago so this is definitely a deal. I will likely sell mine on ebay for a similar price.
