I'd say this outdated train of thought needs to be put to rest. Science is better at understanding our gut biome and how it relates to our health, and artificial sweeteners are way worse for the body than normal sugar and even that dastardly "high fructose corn syrup". I completely wrecked my gut drinking all those zero sugar fad drinks of the last decade, and only recently got myself on the right track by sticking to water and the occasional cane sugar sweetened drink. Cutting sugar out of your diet will be one of the hardest things to accomplish, and there are no shortcuts, especially not by replacing them with zero sugar drinks
Curious as to the symptoms you experienced during this gut wrecking? I've been drinking zero sugar drinks for the past 10 yrs and haven't noticed any symptoms besides some weight loss.
