It's a solid player. It's usually the one people recommend before jumping to the Panasonic that you mentioned (820). The cons of the Sony are that it can freeze mid movie and you have to manually turn on Dolby Vision when a disc has it. Sometimes it's hard to know which discs do and don't. The Panasonic also does up converting and color rendering better than the Sony (significantly in some people's eyes).

When comparing the Sony to almost any other player, it's as good or better than them. I'm going to pick another one up for our bedroom at this price.

I own both this player and the Panasonic 820. The entry level Panasonic is probably the only other one worth considering against this Sony.

Got the Panasonic UB820 that was recently on sale and have been putting it through its paces. Out of the 7 UHD discs that I've tested so far, 3 had freezing/pixelation issues (Sisu, Ironman, Alita Battle Angel.) Even though the discs were new I gave them a thorough wipe down with a microfiber cloth and this solved the freezing.

Seems like 4K blus are just a janky format compared to 1080p Blu-rays and the occasional freezing is just something you have to live with. Shame because when it works it looks great. Interstellar was one of the discs that played perfectly through and that movie is amazing in 4K.

Not sure if this has been asked but is this better than PS5 for watching movies?

You have any disc freezing issues with your 820? I'm starting to feel like I got a lemon. :/

if you wiped them down and they played fine after that it 's probably the offgassing from the 4K cases. Blu-rays have it too but it's usually not as big a problem. The thing is, the 4K discs have data stacked so close together that the error correction for the laser can't compensate so they're much more sensitive to issues like that. Cleaning the discs with eyeglass cleaner and a microfiber cloth is good practice for them. less likely you got a lemon if they worked AFTER cleaning. it's if they don't work after cleaning still that you might have issues.

Have the LG UP970 UltraHD player from 2018 that supports HDR10 & Dolby Vision. Spent around $99. Recently watched the Harry Potter series (Ultra HD Discs) on our new LG B3 OLED. All movies played with no issue. Any reason I should be to thinking about moving on to something newer?
