My guess it's not shuckable, but can anyone confirm?
Also, how come the price of these drives is still the same as sevaral years ago?

My guess is that these have 2.5" drives in them....didn't look too close, but if it doesn't require external power then it's 2.5"
$20/tb isn't good deal but this is kinda in a different use case.

I have a WD Elements 5Tb drive from a BF sale at BestBuy in 2020. I'm unsure it's the same model as it could be a BB exclusive. My drive runs good (not problems since my purchase), although it's a bit slow (on my system) to become recognized (you can hear the drive spooling up). I also have several 4Tb WD Passports and they spool faster (maybe different RPM?)....and like the Elements drive, no problem with these either, but I rarely leave my external hard drives plugged in (inserted) for extended periods.

Quick note....
This drive only has a 2yr warranty...whereas the 4Tb Passport you mentioned in your post, might include a 3yr warranty (as mine does). Not sure if warranty length or storage space is more important to you.

Best wishes...hope this helps with your question.

I agree with you ($20/Tb). I have several Elements drives from BestBuy BF sales, and although I've never shucked any of them, I don't see the cost benefit.

That said, a recent post here on Slick Deals, for an internal 4Tb WD Blue is available at MicroCenter (if you're fortunate to have one close to your location) for $50. There is debate if the drive is SMR or CMR (the MicroCenter listing is also inconclusive). Either way, a 5.25" enclosure (also available in a recent SD post) could come as a possible alternative to shucking.

4Tb WD Blue at MicroCenter:

External HD enclosure (for 5.25" or 2.5" drives) from Amazon (deal might be dead):

As you were replying to my message, I came across this additional sale (if you have a Sam's Club in your area...and have a membership). This product has the 3yr warranty.

WD Passport 5Tb External HD at Sam's Club for $100

No problem, Glad you were aware. Just saw it in my SD feed and forgot to include it in my original reply. Smilie

Great device. I have been running it as my ZFS backup pool for over 6 years now. Its powered ON 24x7 since first powered in mid 2018 connected to my TrueNAS server. These occasionally show up on eBay sold via WD store as refurbished for $49-$69. When I bought them I picked up 4 for $52 each and they were sealed brand new.

I bought two of this exact hard drive in November and both failed almost immediately. First data showed up corrupted after copying, then clicks of death. Never had that happen from WD before. BB took them back no questions, but didn't give me a lot of confidence in the latest batch of 3.5's,
