Unless you have a habit of visiting sketchy sites or downloading pirated files, Windows Defender works great. It's built in to Windows and it's free. It's light on system resources and you don't have to worry about managing subscriptions.
I work in IT. Norton literally slows your PC down and is worse than Windows Defender.

None of these products will protect you from phishing.
Every year I say I'm going to get rid of Norton, and then every year there's a deal for such little money that I just cave in and re-up for another year.
I guess I'm nervous about windows defender. Will it remove scripts from downloaded files? Does it verify downloaded Exe files are virus free? Does it monitor for sketchy web addresses that a site might launch?

These are all things that I see Norton doing all the time. I have kids and a wife that may not be the savviest web surfers out there...

Just note, I have used Norton for years. Last year I made a reminder to turn off auto renewal like 10 days before it expired. They charged me the going rate like 30 days prior to expiration, not the day it expired. I did not get any emails to remind me it was renewing or anything like that. I did get an email that I was charged which is how I knew. I was able to contact them and immediately and get a refund, but if you don't notice it right away you may be out of luck. Turning auto renew off immediately after installing is the better way to go.
thanks for posting this Smilie it's a very good warning !

It is possible to remove your credit card info - I do this all the time for Norton.. and Norton will still work.. but as you say if you leave the credit card info in there Norton can and will quietly try to bill you for some obscene amount.

Norton will ask you to create a Norton account then demand your credit card info to make the product work.. that's fine go ahead and do that.. then when Norton is up and running go back into your account, turn off auto renew and remove your credit card info from the account right after turning off auto renew.

Be careful turning off auto renew you'll have to answer several prompts where Norton makes it REAL easy to click the wrong one saying " Yes I'll keep auto renew" (they're sneaky and highlight it in yellow to catch your sub-conscious attention for one thing Stick Out Tongue ) .. so watch those prompts very carefully.

Also in IT in security, seconded. There is no scenario I ever recommend Norton products. 100% garbage software.

I have been a loyal Norton customer for a long time. I visit sketchy websites weekly and this software always stops all the random installs that sketchy websites throw my way.

I think this is the feedback most wanted.

Easy, yet people get phished all the time. I agree with you and you're 100% correct, but I would say it's also easy for someone to get phished if they're not paying attention.
Agreed but in this day and age you simply have cannot "reply" to ANY email about ANY kind of account. If you get ANY email about ANY account—no matter how trivial the account may seem to you (e.g. Slickdeals)—the smartest and safest bet is to ignore the email and go directly to the web page for that account or service and sign in and check your account and messages there. If there is a real issue there will be a notice there. Even if the account seems trivial — once a hacker gets access to any account they might be able to get a lot of information from that web site's owners who believe they are dealing with you.

av-comparatives.org tests anti-virus software. Norton isn't the best-rated anti-virus, but it's better than Windows Defender.

How do you turn auto-renew off? I have searched for a way but everything i find says to cancel subscription.

I did it to mine last night. It looks like you're cancelling but in reality you're cancelling auto renewal. I went through with it and it still shows my 6/30 subscription end date.

I did have to pause my process and do a Google search to make sure though before I just went for it.

I just do not see the point of this. Norton has a crap history of trying to pull underhanded things on their customers, slow down PCs, break OS installs, and just be a lousy security software suite. It may not be the same cancerous scourge it once was but pre-built PCs frequently come with it, and almost every IT professional considers it bloatware to be removed ASAP. The software will auto-renew using whatever pricing the company feels they can get away with if you're not careful. Aside from occasional false positives with W Defender, it is no better or worse than this FREE, included product. The interface isn't even very good and will confuse old people, especially when it whines if you don't have every possible feature purchased. I am my large family's PC support tech and I cannot count the "I think I have a virus! The Norton is saying I am not protected and there's a problem!" phone calls I've gotten because of Norton being on their computers due to it being discreetly installed as malware when they were browsing. Then I have to walk them through the needlessly annoying process of uninstalling the software, which requires its own special uninstaller with options I don't have memorized like other softwares. Even if you're a member of the better-safe-than-sorry crowd and for whatever reason just prefer this to windows defender, why would you even put yourself in the position to accidentally auto-renew for a ton of money, deal with the unnecessary popups, and in the least, waste 20 bucks? Why would you even want to support a company that operates like this in the first place?

Why wait? I turn off the auto renewal right after I activate the subscription.

I think because when you go to shut it off they make it sound like you're cancelling your subscription so I decided to wait in case they did. I have since learned they don't it's just their purposely confusing wording

2 years ago I bought this on a super cheap deal. After the 1 year anniversary, I had no idea auto renew was on until I randomly saw a charge for $100! I caved and just went well it's done. Fast fwd to today and I know my subscription ends in a couple months so I went on this morning actually I turned just the renewal piece off. You can turn that off at any time so you won't get auto charged.

Yes, I would think so. Just in case it wasn't obvious, you'd install this on devices for the next 15 months. Then after that 15-month period has expired, you'd need to re-install on all the devices again.
Some things in mind:
  1. Renew vs New subscription - This is one of the ways that Norton makes more money. They sell the 1st year subscription for cheap (i.e., $20), but then the annual renewal cost will be much higher (like $50 or $100). If you don't want to pay the higher renewal cost, then you'd buy a new subscription and go through all the setup again (i.e., you may need to reinstall on all computers/devices and add them again to the new subscription plan).
  2. Will you remember in 15 months? - Are you the type of person who will remember that you made this purchase in Feb 2024 when it's May 2025? If not, then you're just wasting your money. If you think you're not going to remember in 15-months' time, then just buy 1 now, and then start hunting (on slickdeals) for your next Norton subscription when your current subscription has a few months remaining.

I just put a reminder in my calendar a few days before renewal. Do the same for other streaming services too as well as for when things like Prime renewal occurs or other random bills that I won't remember in a few months time.
