Is anyone familiar with the scam regarding receiving a US soldier's packages from foreign plunder?

I made an online "friend" a few months ago. She is a US Army soldier stationed abroad in Syria. Because she's in a dangerous environment, she is not allowed to engage in video chat and their systems prevent the clicking of many web links.
She told me she has no relatives or friends and that she needed to get her luggage out of the country to me for safe keeping. I said yes. I've already checked out the WHOIS for the courier service. It was registered on Jan 2023 and expires Jan 2025. It seems to be owned by a Nigerian.
Obviously I'm not going to pay this ransom money. This is a ridiculous amount for someone I don't really know is the person in question in the photos.
What do you think of this scam and how does it work?

What do I think of it? I'm often astounded how naive people can be.
How does it work? A fool responds and pays them the money and they move on to the next fool. Pretty straightforward if you ask me.
Edit to add -
whomever this actually is has been stringing you along for a few months to scam you out of whatever they can get. it's all lies. stop all contact asap.

IIRC, I've also disclosed that I have an online relationship (4 years now, no longer romantic) and advise against it. It's just healthier to meet people in your city and form attachments that way.

First you need to get fed, then they need to make sure you are well fed and then, and only then, go for the kill!
Pig Butchering 101 clearly teaches you that, you are dealing with a bunch of desperate/broke wanna b's!
