These have worse practical performance than the first generation, which is sad because the hardware is much better. These are crippled because of various factors that shrink the available pool of pingbacks to a relatively small fraction of Samsung phones, and that fraction gets smaller if you consider all Android phones, or all phones in general.

Pingback phones are opt-in with the 2nd generation. When the phone is being setup, the owner has to check the box to include SmartThings Find, otherwise it won't participate in the tag ecosystem. And to even be eligible, a phone has to be one of the luxury-trim flagship models from within the past three generations (e.g. S21 Ultra, S23+, ZFold5). Base models (e.g. S23) and fan editions are not supported for either tracking or participating in pingback. You might see a lot of people walking near the tag, but if they use a S10, A54, ZFold1, S22 FE, Pixel, Nokia, OnePlus, iPhone, or didn't give explicit consent on setup then it does you no good.
This is from amazon marketplace seller

Ships and sold by amazon price is $99.99
That all sounds fine and good, but in ACTUAL application and usage, I've had these trackers for some time and I get pinged EVERYWHERE. They work great. Never had an issue of not being able to track them. And just look at the reviews online in places like Amazon. Their experiences are the same. These things are solid.

I've just ordered 4 more now. Thanks OP.

So my wife has a OnePlus android phone with Life360 using Mint Mobile service. All android settings are correct for the app but there are a lot of "dead spots" between home and her job on the interstate. This is with Life360 and Google Maps location. Any ideas why?

Kids have the same setup and their location is usually accurate.

Was thinking of getting an AirTag/Tile/tracker for her car as a work around.

Is she turning it off when she meets up with dudes at rest stops?

From a purely hardware and software standpoint, these are better than airtags. People mention the limited pinging phones, etc, but in practice, at least in my area, it works fine. My biggest gripe with these is how often I accidentally set them off in my pocket.

I signed into my Samsung EPP account and pop-up displayed asking me to "register to receive the latest updates on Samsung's exclusive offers, upcoming events, product news, and more!" ...so I did and I received a $25 eCertification code in my email.

Maybe it was targeted, but it worked on this purchase.

Um, I was agreeing with you in making fun of the other guy. Reread it. Your sarcasm ticker is way off. And btw, I worked with the guy who invented the GUI years later at Disney Imagineering R&D years after Apple stole that and the mouse from Xerox PARC).
Oops, my mistake. Yikes! 😁

This place (and online forums in general) can be so antagonistic, my shields must've been on full power from a previous engagement. I think it's that Star Trek Enterprise D toy I just bought, LOL.

Yup, me too, stopped me from buying, even though I'm logged in with educational discount, and the product page shows $67.49, but added to cart shows $74.99

Keep in mind these only work on Samsung devices. Air tags only work on Apple devices.

Tiles are more universal but don't work nearly as well. Googles in-house "air tag" alternative for android hasn't been launched yet.

Understood. I have an s23u and I was originally looking into airtags because i figured I'd get better network finding due to the abundance of iPhones. Then i learned you need an iOS device to set them up, which i have none of currently and don't feel like borrowing a friend's to try it. I'll give these a try and see how they go instead

I agree - I bought these a few months ago and have used them in my luggage for about a dozen trips. I've check after each leg, and I never failed to get a ping. VERY happy with the performance (better than I thought it would be)

I own quite a few Samsung tags (purchased directly from Samsung) and hate this generation. Most annoying is the random chirps throughout the day on all of them. And NO the battery is not lose on them all. This is a pretty widespread problem.

I wont buy more from Samsung until they come out with something better. First generation were much better in form and performance.

I thought this was just me.

The last gen were so much better.

Current smarttags chirp for no reason and severe battery drain, especially batteries straight out of the box. Bought 4 pack last time and everywhere I go, random chirps.

Sometimes it takes forever to load the map. Really disappointed, hopefully they come up with a firmware fix.

I'm getting this to finally get the Tile tags out of my life! Tile is okay but you have to pay extra for the Smart Alert feature that notifies you when you leave your item behind. That feature is FREE using Samsung tags + phones!

So if you've got a Samsung phone this is a must-have accessory. I have one in my wallet using a silicone sleeve shaped like a credit card that I got from Amazon. I have it setup to notify me when my wallet & phone are not near each other. I often leave the house without my wallet so now I receive a notification when I'm down the street (better than when I remember when I'm on the freeway).

I have a Moto phone. Is there a way I can use these Samsung SmartTags or it requires a compatible Samsung phone? I understand that the tag can only ping certain Samsung phones, but could any modern Android phone be used to track the location of the tag and where it's been?

Also, is a Samsung A54 5G phone one of the compatible Samsung phones that this tag can ping?
