Good luck with that. They are no longer safe because the plastic degrades but you save a few cents and risk your eyesight. Wow

They do not degrade or expire.

"Made in USA"... for 10 cents, which really means made in China with a fake "Made in USA" label. Buy hey, maybe these are legit! They just stole a patent and now sell someone's invention dirt cheap.

They actually cost 20cents to make in bulk. Only two companies in the world make the ISO certified film. One is American paper optics and the other is a German company. The rest of the quality manufacturers source from these two companies. Almost anything made in China is not certified or using certifications from China labs (YMMV).

Look for the manufacturers address on the glasses as this is required by the ISO certification. Most of the Chinese glasses don't want you to be able to track them down to their home factory.

anything that says NASA certified is also counterfeit.

From nasa:
"Furthermore, if the filters aren't scratched, punctured, or torn, you may reuse them indefinitely"

If you're purchasing them in-store at Walmart (which is what this deal refers to), I'd confidently say they've done their due diligence to ensure safety. If you look at the photo of the inside of the glasses, they clearly show the ISO Certification.
Likely, one of the main reasons they're exclusively selling them in-store is to avoid confusion and prevent customers from inadvertently purchasing counterfeit products from third-party online sources.

I'm pleased to see people exercising caution when it comes to purchasing potential counterfeit solar eclipse glasses. There are countless unsafe options online that could seriously harm someone's eyes.
However, in this instance, as long as you're not buying them from a third-party seller, everything should be in order. Walmart is the biggest company in the world, they know retail, they know products, they wouldn't risk a lawsuit selling an unsafe solar eclipse viewer in their store.

Walmart will not be the one getting sued but the manufacturer of the glasses. You clearly don't know much. When any product is recalled, the store selling the product is never to blame

Wouldn't that mean making them out of cheap disposable and biodegradable materials makes more sense?

The glasses I ordered directly from NASA were mailed from Houston and are made by American Paper Optics. There is all kinds of certification and contact information on them. Phone number, email, and address.

If anyone is curious, I've ordered batches of these paper solar viewing glasses over the years for a group I volunteer with. I agree that Walmart has probably vetted these thoroughly to avoid lawsuits, but buying online is not the same. You'll find glasses with the ISO 12312-2 marking, with the trademarks of reputable companies, but are anything but real. The quickest smoke test I've come up with to weed out fakes is a 2 part test - part 1, shine your phone LED flashlight through them - front to back. The light should be visible, but reduced almost entirely, to the point where you can see the LED module itself (little rectangular blocky thing). Part 2 is the reflection test; looking at the lenses from the front (i.e. sun facing side), and from a slight angle, there should be almost a mirror like finish. Knockoffs may block out most light, but won't have a mirror like finish. They'll just be black.

If you're confident they pass 1 and 2, take them outside and carefully try them by just looking at the sun briefly. You should feel absolutely no pain or discomfort. Some fakes will make it possible to look at the sun, but still cause discomfort. THIS IS BAD. Don't use them if you feel any discomfort whatsoever - even if it's bearable. Real glasses won't make your eyes water, and you won't have a desire to squint or look away.

That last part should go for any glasses, even if you did buy them from a reputable vendor. Most importantly, you should never feel discomfort. If you do they're not working.

The actual paper frames NASA distributes internally do have a NASA logo and "eclipse through the eyes of NASA" branding. But yes, they don't say "NASA certified" anywhere on them. They contain the link "go.nasa.gov/EclipseEyeSafety" as both a URL and QR code, as well as the regulatory markings for ISO 12312-2. Also includes address of American Paper Optics, and an internal product ID containing the date and the site that they were ordered by (e.g. NP-2022-10-886-GSFC).

Irony here is that it seems that the vast majority of the totality band will be under cloudcover. Granted we are a week out and this will change but it's unlikely it will go from 90+% cloudcover to 0%.
