I just started playing this game maybe 2-3 months ago. I've generally stayed away from MMORPGs, in part because I'm wary of assholes, but the FF14 community seems to be pretty good. They're generally pretty friendly and even courteous, like waiting for people who haven't seen the little cut scenes at the beginning of the final boss fight in a dungeon to finish watching it before triggering the boss. Out of probably literally hundreds of dungeon crawls, there's only been one instance I can think of where a couple of players were being assholes. They were being assholes to each other because one of them did something the other didn't like or I don't really know, I was just trying to level my character and wasn't really paying close attention to the others.

Biggest complaint I have about FF14, is there's a lot of people who've obviously been playing since the beginning, and they'll leave characters logged in for literally days at a time not doing anything. Meanwhile, every time I log in, I usually have to wait a minute or two for some people to log out so I can log in, and there are these idiots not actually playing, but are taking up a slot for people who want to actually actively play. It's one thing if you just step away from the game for a bit, but you'll see the same character in exactly the same spot for literally days at a time. It's annoying, but it could obviously be a lot worse.

You can always grab the free trial, play for a few days, and then see for yourself.
If you can finish everything within 30-days... which is more or less impossible unless you focus on only one or two character classes and ignore almost every side quest. Even then, you may be hard pressed. There's a LOT to do in this game. Otherwise, you have to pay up every 30-days. If you're a casual player who probably only wants to have 1, maybe 2 characters, it's like $12/mo. If you think you're going to be a much more hardcore player than that, with dozens of different characters, it's more like $18/mo.

There's also the free trial version which I think has everything except the most recent expansion. There are some limitations, like you can't use retainers, can't use the in-game market, limited to 300K in currency, and a couple other things, but there are no restrictions on things like the amount of time you can play in a given day. All in all, as free trials go, it's pretty damn generous. They'll probably add the Endwalker expansion to the free trial not too long after the new Dawntrail expansion comes out in July. If you're really determined, you could probably make your way through all but the Endwalker expansion on the free trial and then redeem this for the 30-days that comes with it and finish out Endwalker. I haven't gotten nearly that far, but from what I understand, Endwalker sort of wraps up the story they started with A Realm Reborn and Dawntrail will be starting a whole new storyline along with providing a fairly significant graphical update.

Hey, just so you know, FFXIV does logins in batches. So, the wait you experience isn't an actual queue caused by the AFKers, but simply the game waiting for 25 or so people to log them all in at the same time.

At the launch of a new expansion there will certainly be actual queues, but outside of that it is just the batched logins that are pretty common nowadays.

This game sucks compared to WoW. WoW is way better in every way. You have three to choose from, SoD, Classic, or Retail. Numbers don't lie and obviously WoW is the most played and highest subscribed mmorpg of any. FF14 simp fans will try to discredit wow in any way they can but they are obviously drinking the simp juice.

Tell me you have never played FF14 without actually telling me you never played FF14...

I have played WoW since beta. Sure it is a great game, great nostalgia and best played with friends. But Blizzard is just lost now. Banking on nostalgia, and for players like me (heroic/mythic raiding) it is a cycle losing my interest.

FF14 is a breath of fresh air to MMORPG players. The single player experience is well over 100 hours of good FF RPG gameplay. The world, vast and beautiful with a lot to do. You can see the passion the developers put into it. You can even play solo with bots in instances if you wanted giving more options for the single player experience. End game is inspired and fun. The community very friendly compared to WoW. WoW mythic/heroic players are quite possibly the worst. Where as I found FF14 end game players are willing to teach.

As an MMORPG fan (and I tried a lot of them), FF14 is a great game and holds up to WoW in a lot of ways. I highly recommend this game.

You posting that asinine bs discredits WoW more than any person in this topic ever could.

I've played through Shadowbringers and I've been debating getting back into the game. The main problem is myself when it comes to the game. I know 12.99 isn't a ton of money, but being a frugal type of person if I pay the subscription I then feel obligated to play that game above all others. I am jealous of people who are one game people, but I just can't do it.

Would love to play but I just can't see myself paying a monthly fee, not knocking, it's how they provide content and it's been successful doing so but just can't do it.

11yo mmorpg game. How much life do you reckon it still has, or is it at end of life?

My anecdotal experience was opposite. I didn't know what I was doing as tank, so they vote kicked me out. I decided the game wasn't worth playing.

I just started playing the free trial over the weekend and had a great time with it as a single player.

I know that some people would view that as a weird way to play a MMORPG, but the free trial hasn't really thrown any limits at me to prevent me having a good time with it.

Apologizes if you've seen it before but here is the infamous FFXIV copypasta.

"Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV which has an expanded free trial that you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning HEAVENSWARD and STORMBLOOD expansions up to level 70 for free with no restrictions on playtime? Now available on XBOX series X & S! Sign up and enjoy Eorzea today!"

https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/

As for this deal, if you buy it for PC/Mac you can hold onto the code you receive until you're ready to end the free trial. Just be aware that once the free trial ends you can't go back. Some people confuse 'free trial' and 'free to play' games, thinking they can go back to playing for free with restrictions if they stop paying the subscription.

a little more detail on this - it's to help prevent denial of service attacks. the number of people logged in has no effect on the number of people allowed to log in, but when more people are trying to log in at the same time the queue can build up faster than the login server can handle them. typically only happens during the big patch updates (5.0 6.0 7.0 etc), one of which is in about 90 days (7.0).
hopefully they've worked on updating the login servers to handle things this time. 6.0 was pretty bad, several hour long queues some days at peak times, and it would sometimes drop the connection which put you back at the end of the line.
Otherwise most of the time it's less than a minute to log in.

While my brief attempt at WoW ended without me ever being able to figure out how to trigger actual story quests, the one thing I kind of like about FF14 is that when you're doing a dungeon or raid, you're essentially forced to work together. Unless you go out of your way to create an unrestricted party, someone has to be the tank, someone the healer, and then a couple supports. Generally there's no way to complete a dungeon or raid without everyone doing their part. The one downside to that is if someone's connection drops out, you may just have to start over in the duty queue. You can probably get by with only 1xDPS character, but lose your tank or healer, and forget it. Very few people even know there's a setting to let you join in-process duties. I only found it by accident when looking for some other setting.

I just had to respond because I'm the same way. If I'm paying to play a game, I feel like I damn well better play it. Sometimes I'm just not feeling it, so I won't force it, and stop after only an hour or two, sometimes it sucks up an entire weekend. I haven't even turned on my Xbox or Playstation in probably a couple months.

I wasn't there, so I don't know exactly what happened, but based on what I've witnessed, you'd have to be doing something pretty bad for that to happen. There's a big warning when you vote to dismiss someone from a party about how if you do it for malicious reasons it could result in some kind of sanction. And you have to specify a reason why you're voting to dismiss someone, and "n00b" isn't on the list. I suppose it's also possible you just got "lucky" and got paired up with a bunch of assholes. Back when I was learning to tank, someone gave me a few little helpful hints in the chat. After that, I just try to observe others, and sometimes you pick up interesting tricks.
