I know I'm getting old when I look at this beautiful set and think it should be about 80 bucks.
Finally, a starter home in my price range.
The original price for this set is outrageous. Still needs to go lower before I'd think about getting it.

Me: This set is gorgeous, but there's no way I can justify buying this.

Also me: In for one.

I thought the same thing. Going to need some bearskin figures, and a pie.

I would agree with you, this costs about $5 in materials. But supply and demand!
If you mean literally only the plastic, sure. If you mean the pieces there's a shit ton of machinery and design required to produce them so not $5 at all. I bet the gross margin TLG (The LEGO Group) gets on this set is 70-80%, so $36-$54 in materials.

Yeah but wait until you see your mortgage rate. You'll end up paying $360.35 after 30 years at 7.03%

Also the months spent by a team of engineers to design.

I feel like sets from 80s and 90s had fewer tiny pieces and detail pieces that you can't even see without partly disassembling the model (not like opening a roof, by removing the lowest deck of boat), and that the piece count is inflated in newer sets.

Kids and grownups still love them though, of course!

Exactly! The little detail pieces really inflate the piece count on these sets. They are just so detailed and cool though! I just think, while it says 2000+ pieces, I think of it as about 1100 pieces of substance. Just my opinion. It doesn't mean this isn't a very cool set.

Total cost (fixed and variable) not materials

I have to say it does look pretty nice. I'm sure I'm not alone with thinking that this looks like a great weekend home.
