iphone water message

I have an IP14, and am using a charger I got from sams club.
I always thought there was an issue with the charging port, because when connected and I move around, it always makes that "ding" like when you first connect it.
Today, I tried to charge it as usual. A water damage message came up, and said it would not allow the phone to charge.
I tried to clean the charger, and the port, still happens.
I shut the phone off, and tried to charge it, that worked fine. The phone turned on while connected to the charger, and no message.
I did not drop the phone in any water.
