Dell "refurbished" is not refurbished to any degree -- it's outright "used". Maybe they gave it a wipe down, basic power test. Nothing was done to "refurbish" these machines.
I own four of them, and they were very clearly used and abused. For the price, they're acceptable.
Looking to replace an aging 2018 Dell desktop. Just need something for everyday casual use: word processing, web browsing, etc. But I would like something that has decent speed and is also not a heavy brick to carry when I do take it on travel. Thanks!

Just had that conversation with someone. Would be nice to find a company that would give you a fresh battery, deep clean and maybe a repaste. Guess the profit just isn't there. I agree, I own two and for this price, it works.

Apple refurbished does that, but it's nowhere from 48% off. Maybe 15% off MSRP at most.
I've purchased a # of these over the years. Always got grade A and they look like they were barely touched. No dust in the fan/heatsinks, no finger oils on the keyboard/touchpad area (laptop).
Occasionally a small scratch on the exterior of the laptop.
In fact I just bought a Precision 5550 last week from Dell refurbished. It has 3 minor scratches on the front edge. Other than that, it looks brand new. The only issue I had with it is the battery only has about 55% of capacity left. And the SSD in the unit was not the original that was shipped with the system, and only has 69% life left (the system originally shipped with a SN730, but arrived with a PM9A1 SSD.)
It also didn't have the usb-c to usb-a/hdmi dongle.
I emailed Dell refurbished about these. They are shipping me a replacement battery. But can't do anything about the SSD or dongle.
Can't complain for a $400 laptop that cost over $3k just 3 years ago and is still plenty fast for most everyday tasks and is built solid to last for many more years. This will be used to replace a 9 year old Dell Latitude that was also purchased from the refurbished store about 6 years ago. (Which still works fine and I just sold on craigslist for $100).

I honestly don't really think you can go wrong with these things. I've bought several laptops during these deals and all have been just fine. I use them for exactly what you use them for. I'm not a PC power user by any means and have always just gotten laptops with 8GB of RAM and typically a 256GB SSD. Always been enough for me. However, depending on the price differential and your budget, may be worth getting 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD.
Dell 5411 grade A (make sure you get the 1080p display, same price) for $184 isn't bad at all.
Or you could take it up to 16GB of RAM/512GB SSD for $223 on a 5410. Can't really go wrong with either honestly.
I bought a Dell refurbished monitor that ended up having lines all the way across the entire screen. I fought with them for two weeks about how they're there, sent several photos, sent a video, showed the lines in the monitor menu when the computer was off, etc. etc. In the end I literally threw it on the floor and smashed it because I was so sick of dealing with idiot their support people.

Bought a bunch of Optiplex desktops from Dell Refurbished and almost all of them had a dead battery for the clock/CMOS setup. And this was over a period of months. I don't think Dell bothers checking batteries at all.
Been waiting for this deal to return for a while. The Precision desktops are a really nice deal for a reasonably priced gaming/productivity workstation - and while the Quadro P2000 isn't quite a gaming beast, it's perfectly useful for 1080p gaming in addition to being fantastic for processing video.
