I had Dewalt (Or Stanley, they all look similar) branded one of this I think it's same thing, charges with microUSB. The battery was non replaceable, it died and swole up. I bought a different one that works with 2 AAA instead. I suggest you do the same.

Fair point but I never leave batteries in stuff I don't use a lot

I always turn one battery around when the item isn't needed for some time. Tends to stay good and not leak.

Bought this when the dewalt deal was going around. Was my favorite tool when designing and building our house. Called it "my precious." It's small and inconspicuous, allowing you to carry it and use it everywhere. When designing, I measured in existing houses to gain perspective on how room sizes and walkway spaces functioned in practice—and then made tweaks on our own home plan. When building, it was really helpful to quickly verify room sizes and check future furniture spacing issues.

Actually used it yesterday to measure the space on my front porch before buying a new door mat.

You answered the key question. When possible I always reject buying when the battery is built in, as will I here.

If leak is worrying anyone when unused for long periods, you can just remove the battery and install it when you need to use it, takes 2 seconds. I never had a leak with good batteries but I can understand how it can be an issue.

I dunno. camel^3 has this as the lowest price "ever" (aka since they first tracked it last May) at Amazon.

(SD's price history has never been perfect for me.)

Micro-USB is a definite no go at this point.

Is USB-C a lot more expensive for them in licensing for something? I honestly don't understand.

I frequently read this tip, but clearly I need to work on my ability to predict that I won't use a device for a long time. I've recently encountered leakage in a keyboard and a labeler, and I doubt the last time I used them I had any inkling that I wouldn't be using them again for months or years. And taking batteries out of every device every time you're done using it seems impractical. More than a few devices have battery compartments that are a pain to access.

In recent years I put eneloops in pretty much everything, which seems to solve the problem - though time will tell.

These were being made like 10 years ago so they probably bought 1 million micro USB connectors and still selling them..
