About this film:
"Wonka" tells the wondrous story of how the world's greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today.
Starring Timothée Chalamet
This irresistibly vivid and inventive big screen spectacle will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka, chock‐full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time—proving that the best things in life begin with a dream, and if you're lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka, anything is possible.
If they gave Oscars for "Movies That Didn't Suck Like You Thought They Were Going To And In Fact Were Pretty Good", this movie would sweep! No brainer at this price, thanks!
I love the original Willy Wonka and when I heard there was going to be ANOTHER remake, my expectations were low to say the least, then I saw the trailer, I couldn't have been more disappointed. Thankfully I have HBO Max and decided to watch it on release because, why not, it's essentially free.
I loved it. I probably have watched it about 10 times now, from the story to the songs, it was really done well. I originally thought Jeremy Allen White should've played the part (due to looks, like a young Gene Wilder) but Timothee Chalamet really knocked it out of the park.
Definitely recommended at this price for sure. Is it a 10/10 movie? No but really just a wholesome and good-feeling movie.
Highly subjective, but I'll put in my 2 cents. I had shut this one off after 20 minutes. I dunno why, but I just couldn't deal with it. I own the original movie with Gene Wilder and I've probably watched it a couple dozen times, so I'm highly biased towards it and this one just rubbed me all the wrong ways.

We went to a screening about 8 months before it came out, and thought it was the literal worst movie we'd ever seen. I'm not saying that superlatively, it was the absolute worst movie we had ever seen objectively. Then it came out and got decent reviews, so we probably need to watch it again. They must have fixed some of it.
I mean, they're slaves yet they leave the house and wander around and willingly go back?
Slaves is a bit much. They were essentially paying off debts and the hotel owners owned the cops. Where would they go? And did you take everything in this movie so seriously?

They were literally wandering around the city freely. Um, just leave? Where did they suddenly get the money to open a shop? You think leaving is a worse option than staying in indentured servitude for 20 years? Seriously, I can suspend disbelief but this was just shoddy writing and incredibly stupid.

Same. 3 kids under 10 in my house love the original but bounced right off of this one.
Saw this in IMAX and it was very good. A feel good movie of a life before stressors. If you are not a movie person or just a blah, person about most things this isn't for u. Negative folk should exit, right

You clearly didn't watch the movie very closely. It was very obvious where they got the money to open the shop. And again, they owned the cops so if they attempted to leave they would've been arrested or stopped. They needed a way for Wonka to rise from poverty and to intrduce all the characters. Yes it could've probably been down a bit better but I thought it was well within the realm of suspending disbelief. Did you suspend disbelief for the candy that makes people float? LOL.

No. Barbie was the worst movie that year.

I am curious though: do fans prefer this version or the Johnny Depp version?
I wanted and hoped to like it but it was pretty bad. 4/10
I did not like this movie. The songs are forgettable, Timothee sucks as Willy Wonka, and all of the other characters are bland and one-dimensionable.
