You can find details online, but the biggest differences are build quality, the filter media, and noise.

Build quality is self explanatory.

The aquaclears use filter media baskets instead of cartridges which you can fill with your own media (or combos of media). I run a coarse sponge, polyfill, and bio media in mine, for example. This not only does a better job, but is extremely cheaper than cartridges. You can mod a catridge hang on back to do the same thing, but you still have a cheaper pump to worry about.

Noise is also self explanatory.

Overall, aquaclear is the winner hands down. I would highly recommend getting one. But at this price point? This is still a solid deal.

More details please. Why is aqua clear better? Which one are you recommending? Are you currently using this?

Yes and use your own media - instead of their filters. You can buy or use DIY media.

Aquaclear size wise price won't be this close plus they are kinda getting scarce

To be fair, the price difference would be made up the first time you buy new cartridges for this unit.

The aquaclears have seemingly always been scarce online, but local pet stores/big chain stores seem to always have them in stock.

Thank you for the detailed response brother. Seems like the DIY filtration will pay for itself.

But another question, I have a small tank that I'm going to be using, 10 to 15 gallon, is it a bad idea to get a bigger filter in case I end up upgrading my tank to a larger size in the future?

Is there any downside to that? Thanks!

edit: for reference, I'm looking at this.

Decent deal. Would get this as an add on to move water in the tank and not necessarily the main filter. Also, just cause it uses filter cartridges doesn't mean you still can't use your own media in the filter instead. It's a little less room but still works

Bad idea. The flow and suction is too much for small fish in a 10 to 15 gallon and the size of the filter would take up half the tank giving the fish least space to swim

Small aquariums work well with sponge filters. I use them on grow out tanks for the plecos I breed. They run on air pumps and hold a great amount of beneficial bacteria. Just rinse them out to clean in a bucket of tank water. Water changes are the key healthy fish and knowing when to them. I don't change much water on filter clean days and rotate filter cleanings on aquariums with multiple filters or sponge filters as to not reset the aquariums bio load. Do a little google on it but sponge filters are excellent

I do agree Aquaclears are better but $20 vs $60 is definitely not minute. the AC70 would be the equivalent (300GPH) to this filter
