I just tried them on and listened to the demos ... nothing else. With the Bose, the outside world disappeared. They sounded amazing. I later learned they implement an immersive spatialized audio ... which must have been what I was experiencing. But, I literally had to remove the headphones several times to make sure the sound was truly coming from the headphones and not from the display in front of me. Very unique experience.

People say this is a gimmic, but to me, it blew away the Sony's. I can't help but feel I'm missing something though... any input would be appreciated!

I picked these up a couple of months ago refurb (mint) from Secondipity/Ebay for $200. Still very happy with the purchase. Make sure you EQ them to open up the sound. They do get warm if you wear them for an extended period of time and the mobile app still sucks. My only regret (and it's not a big one) is getting the beige color as opposed to blue.

On the Sony's, did you have the adaptive sound control on? Not sure what options are available at the store on a demo model. Anyway. I have these and set to ANC instead of the adaptive… at the airport, I can absolutely hear nothing except the rare announcement over the PA, but not even audible enough to be interpretable - and this is without music on. They've been a blessing for travel.

These XM5 released in May 2022, so the XM6 is probably around the corner.

I'm still rocking the XM3s and will eventually move over to the Bowers & Wilkins I bought from Costco. The sound is likely better on the B & W (a lot of people say so online) but the Sony's are still the best for travel because they're compact and foldable (at least XM4s and older). These XM5s are not foldable but Sony decided to make that part of the headphone more durable as the XM4s and XM3s were prone to snapping at those points. The Bose are supposedly the best at comfort as they put a lot of engineering to making them fit and feel comfortable perfectly, while the Sony XMs are some of the best in ANC. People online say the Sony's sound better than the Bose but sound is kind of subjective. You have to try out both to know for sure but also got to make sure all the settings are right (using LDAC or direct analog cable connection?).
