I guess you can work the numbers and justify that in some way, but we had an armed guard with us everywhere we went. Not recommended to walk around downtown at night by yourself, or without a local to assist.
Good food, and they run on the US Dollar, which is nice. Lot of beautiful scenery too.

I don't as just there in January I disagree I was out in San Salvador at 10pm near the Binaes didn't feel unsafe at all. I'm sure there are areas one can avoid. Overall I would say as long as you make common sense decisions and you take normal precautions when visiting another country you'll be fine. Definitely felt safer there than in Mexico and I'm Mexican my wife is the Salvadorian
