I go light on the softener and our Maytag Epic Z washer, front load, lasted for 16 years.
It still worked fine when we gave them away to get replaced by new LG units.
Most folks go way overboard on detergent and softener.
Simply cut the amount in half. Maybe add some baking soda now and again. Works great!
Like others said, it won't do much for softener but it's an effective descaler.
