I find it super annoying they used that terminology. I was assuming it may have had some fancy hydraulic frame suspension system.
The water bladder being called a hydraulics reservoir sounds so much more badass.

I love Osprey, but $54 is still pretty high on a 18L. I think the Hikelite 18L at $40 was a better deal. I guess it just depends on how much you value the water bladder versus the cool frame on the Hikelite.

Both are quality packs, it just comes down to personal fit. You're better just trying them on to find out.

@OP, REI is not free shipping. (I think you have to order a minimum of $60.)

I need a new hydration pack, is osprey preferable to camelbak for hiking? Considering this: https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/t/17399523

(coming from a camelback that had the bladder low on the hips so it didn't put much weight higher in your back, loved the volt)

You can never go wrong with osprey... I have one of their maximum allowable carry 46 l "porter"and I use that singular briefcase, backpack etc. More than all my other equipment put together. The build quality is was just incredible. I have this bag as well. It's well made. It's not as good as they used to make them 5 years ago, but hey that was thin and this is now, but I definitely score a quarter 46l. I've traveled over 400,000, mi on the airlines and I've never found a bag that I can stuff in more airplanes than this one... I don't even know if they make the Porter 46 anymore but the one that you have listed up here. I just found it a bit busy with all the zippers and tubes etc. I'm sure there's better day packs but I'm not sure if there's better ones at this price

For just carrying water and a snack, I prefer my insulated Camelbak. Puts the water right against the back and I throw some ice cubes in before I head out if it's warm out.

Day bags with a reservoir hold more gear, but the are not as slim feeling as just a 2 or 3L Camelbak.

Different purposes. Usually my wife carries one and I carry the other.

Any comment on how water resistant this is? Considering it for skiing.

You are right, thank you. REI raised the free shipping threshold from $50 to $60 this year. I've corrected my post. Reps to you for your help.

I bought this pack awhile back and it just doesn't have a particularly good design. The bottle pockets on the side have holes on the side which causes things to slip out of them. The main pocket is slim and does not hold much compared to my old 18L from REI. There's only a small zippered pocket inside the main pocket that fits a phone, keys, wallet, couple snack bars. Fairly comfortable pack though.
