This is such a cool thing to see here.
Would you be up for posting a link to an example of "5KW of less convenient auto style Lifepo4 at Amazon for about $800 shipped any day"? Curious to see the options you're thinking of.
For me it's adding shipping (~$230) and tax (~$80) for a total of $1477 for one. But they're doing a free shipping over $2000 promotion, so two batteries comes out to $2459 or $1229/each. Pretty good price for a 5kwh battery from a reputable solar retailer.

There are some deals on F150 lightnings in the mid $30k right now, and they have two onboard 20amp circuits, a 90+kwh battery, and are portable (can be moved under their own power). These batteries are a slightly better deal if you don't want a free car to go with them.
Lithium Ion VS Lithium Iron Phosphate. Two completely different battery chemistries. To put it in perspective, I built Lithium Titanate Oxide batteries for my solar setup. These batteries have 20,000 cycle lives, so 7 to 8 times the lifespan of lithium ion. Lithium iron phosphate should be about half of that, still 3 to 4 times the lifespan of lithium ion. Still, I'd love to score a mid 30k lightning. Please link.

"Would you be up for posting a link to an example of 5KW of less convenient auto style Lifepo4 at Amazon for about $800 shipped any day"? Curious to see the options you're thinking of".

I'm not quite sure why you took issue with this. He didn't ask for an "elegant" or "anywhere as useful" solution for house applications. He asked for an example of a 5000kw auto battery solution for $800. I responded with an example of 7200kwh of LiFePo4 auto batteries for $860 shipped. Do you represent him? Do you know his technical knowledge or expertise or why he might be interested in this deal? I for sure don't. I was simply providing a personal example for the question that was asked.

By no means I'm I knocking this deal, I realize that rack mount home solar and power back up batteries are a different animal than 12v "auto" batteries, but that's wasn't the question that was asked.

And for people that might have some technical know how, and don't really care about the clean look of a rack type solution the potential for a 48v home setup using 12v "auto" LiFePo4 batteries is a very realistic possibility. A $30 wire shelf, $100 in wires and lugs, and 4 of the 12v 280ah "auto" batteries wired in series, gets you a 48v 280ah solution, or with these particular batteries that are rated at 3600kwh, 14.4kwh for around $1800.

There was more to this than I originally posted but I cant recall what you said in the statement you deleted or if I was thinking of a reply to another poster, so since I cant recall the convo and what I was replying to as a whole I will call it a day.

Could I rig 1-2 of these up for a whole house backup? I have AC coupled solar currently.
You would need an inverter capable of handling your whole house load, or some people just setup a few circuits to run on backup power (like fridge, lights etc.). You would need an Transfer switch (manual or automatic) to sit between your grid power input and the inverter (with the batteries connected to the inverter).

Can the 12v BMS handle four in series!

It was word for word the exact response, I deleted it because I responded to the wrong poster. I literally cut, deleted, and pasted the same response to the guy that posed the original question.

I'm not positive, but this is quoted from eco-worthy's web site.

" The 280Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery has 3584Wh Energy, and can be expanded to 57.3kwh by wired in 4S4P, Perfect for RV, campers, marine, travel trailer, solar power system, motor homes, UPS, off-grid etc"

I would assume that means the built in BMS could handle it.

Do grid-tie inverters automatically switch over to battery power when solar falls off to power the house? Let's say I have 20kwh of batteries which should be enough to run overnight, or when there's not enough solar input. My use case would not be just for backup power, which is very rarely needed, but for replacing the power demand when the sun is down, so we're not using grid power if at all possible.
I have 10kw of solar panels, which helps keep my EV charged up during the day. If I spend about 5k on batteries and another 2k for the inverter/accessories, it's about 7k. It's not terrible if it adds another 2-3 years to recoup the solar/battery costs. That's roughly 10 years to get full ROI.
The technology is mostly there. The price drops may make it very affordable in the coming couple years. I remember paying 1600 for 2.5kwh 4-5 years ago for my van. I can only imagine if these 5kwh server rack batteries go down to the 750 range. The marine/auto form factors are already in that range for that amount, sometimes less.
They do not automatically switch over. You'd need to add a charge controller and/or automatic transfer switch. Off-grid all-in-one inverters will better manage this automatically.
As far as what it will run, you will need to look into how many watts you are using. If you have 20,000 watts but only use 1000 watts at a given time they will run for a long time but if you are supporting big HVAC and tons of other appliances then it will cut down the run time.

Grid Tie are simple inverters that must have grid power to function. No grid = zero PV production.

Hybrid or All-In-One can switch over to battery, depending on their software/hardware. These cost way more than $2k usually.

You can Parallel up to 16 Batteries for a total of 81.92 KWh of battery storage... Pretty much overkill for any large home..
