I picked one up yesterday and it looks and operates like brand new. Mine came in the original box with some electrical tape over some serial numbers and "Refurbished - 90 Day Warranty Applies." Otherwise, like new.
The LG C3 was recently the same price at Microcenter, but I prefer the Sony for a number of reasons which may make it more appealing to you, too. First, the Sony's stand is height adjustable. Second, the Sony's built-in speakers are much, much better. Third, Google TV is miles ahead of WebOS. Fourth, the remote is much, much better than the Magic Wand. Fifth, Sony's video processing is much better on the 720P and 1080P content that will make up most of your TV watching. Finally, Sony just builds better TVs than anyone, in my experience. Yes, the panel is LG, but the caps and soldering are still Sony quality.
The LG, on the other hand, has four HDMI 2.1 inputes vs. 2 on the Sony. It gets a little brighter, and the anti-reflective coating is more effective. Both are great sets, but the Sony at this price was too tempting to pass up.
Microcenter offers extended warranties on these. I may pick up the 3-year with screen protection - I have a cat and he is very, very stupid. As usual, this is in-store only, so YMMV.
Good luck!

What would you recommend instead at this price? Leaving aside the C3 at target since that was very YMMV

If you can get your hands on one. No targets in my area had stock yesterday, I bet most are out of stock nationwide by now

MicroCenter offers an extended warranty that covers screen repair and replacement for standard use AND accidents. It's the 3-year warranty option, and I highly suggest it for these refurbished units. You likely won't need it, but in the case that you do, it's good to have. There are more than a few posts around of people "abusing" this warranty to get things covered that otherwise would typically be up to the store's discretion. Burn-in isn't explicitly covered here, but if you really don't care about integrity and you run into a burn-in issue, feel free to "drop" your TV and make a warranty claim for a new unit.
Also, MicroCenter offers delivery for these units. You can't add it when checking out online, but even if you submit an online order, you can walk into the store and request (paid) delivery. The price for delivery increases for every 20 miles further away the delivery address is
Think it comes out to $1219 for the TV + 3 years of screen protection warranty, and close to $1300 if you're paying for delivery. Pretty slick deal
I got the 77" for $1599 a week and a half ago and it's been great. No issues with my unit so far. I paid for the delivery since renting a truck would've been over half the cost already. There's 30 days to return for full refund (minus delivery fee). In real world use, it feels fairly similar in brightness to my family member's C2.

It's dim. But not enough to be avoidable. I LOVE mine. Some of the best upscaling I've seen. Paired with an Apple TV 4K unit.
New sony 7 series. Or x90l, x93l
I cant justify spending that much on a tv with such a major flaw.
Would rather a cheap tv over it
Had a tiny bit of remorse with the target deal but at the end of the day it's the same TV regardless so I don't care. I also had my dad pick me up one of the 42" C3s for $359 today.
