How hard to get the generic toner for this printer? From the description it seems that it is taught to dislike the taste of a generic/cheap one?

"HP's recent changes to toner usage and their subscription model have raised concerns. Consider exploring third-party toner options or printers from other brands that may suit your printing needs and budget."

Can't speak for this model but the MFP M479dn wouldnt take generic toner w/o swapping chip from old toner then dealing with low toner warning. Eventually the HP printer would kill the chip and give us a hex error on the screen after the first print that would lockup the printer until reboot. Couldn't find any info on Google about the error. Replace with OEM toner and was fine, reused chips 2-4 times then got this same symptom. I teach my people to replace their own toner, this was not an acceptable solution

IMO only buy HP if your intention is to buy OEM consumables.
