These don't conduct electricity? i.e. It won't short out if I'm undoing my + battery terminal and accidentally hit metal?

The handles on these are non-conductive. The only metal part is the drive/ratchet mechanism.

They would replace with a similar newer model tool, should a discontinued tool ever fail.

So...even if they are discontinued and they replace with a different model, ALL Of the other models are more expensive than this one. So that makes the warranty that much BETTER to have...you could always Write Tekton Customer Service and see what they say. I've reached out to them in the past and they responded fairly quick and precisely.
