You said mostly a gaming machine.. What other tasks do you use your computer for? Assuming the current selling price isn't horrible, you could always sell the 3600
Time to finally upgrade from a Ryzen 5 3600?? Somebody talk me out of it!

I upgraded from a 3700x to a 5950x a few months ago, and I still smile every day I use it. As I do a lot of video editing and rendering - it's been the second best decision I've made in my life.
For this price, better get an i7 12700k which has better performance?
No one is thinking about buying the 5900X if they don't already have an AM4 system to upgrade. So cross shopping against an Intel CPU which entails a completely different ecosystem is a not a consideration.

That's not an upgrade at all. A 12900k would edge this for sure. But if your already on AMD and looking to upgrade, and jump ship to Intel 12th gen is a side grade at best

Mostly a gaming pc? If you never do video editing and any kind of cpu heavy threaded task, as someone else mentioned, the 5800X3D is still one of the best CPUs ever made.
But if you do any kind of video encoding or video editing render like davinci resolve and it heavily relies on the cpu for renders, the 5900x will more than cut your renders in half. But a 5800x3d will only improve by about 50% but the 5900x would improve by over 100%.
But if your gaming and your other tasks aren't heavily threaded tasks, then the 5800x3d is far superior to the 5900x

Main game is Call of Duty, which seems to be CPU heavy since it's so poorly optimized. My understanding is I'll benefit from more cores?

Great CPU btw, I'm not planning to upgrade for at least a few more years.

Was your first best decision getting married? 🙃
