Zipair, a Japanese low-cost airline headquartered at NRT, wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Airlines, via Travelocity have round trip airfares travelling from San Jose CA (SJC) to Narita Tokyo (NRT) for $665 or from San Francisco (SFO) for $702, nonstop. You are allowed a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you, weighing up to 15 lbs. And honestly, 15 lbs packs a lot if you leave your laptop at home. There is FREE wifi onboard throughout the entire flight. Some might say it never worked for them but it does, you'll have to scan the QR code on the back of the seat in front of you and then connect. In-flight food may be purchased in advance or onboard, based on availability....costs about $11 for a hot meal.
Travel Availability:
Departs SFO: Sept 9-12, 17-18; Oct 7-8, 14-18, 20-26

Account made february of 2013?
Yeah no kidding. My first time at Tokyo Haneda blew my mind. Beef noodle bowl and dumplings for like $13US.
Sounds like you did it all wrong. I always go in fall and winter and have gone even waaay up north into snow country. Fall has beautiful California weather combined with the color changing leaves of the season. Winter is just marvelous with the snow makes the outdoor hotsprings onsen experience more magical. If you are into skiing or snowboarding man does Japan have some of the best powder in the world.
These are also the seasons with fewer tourists, transportation via trains is top-notch or rent a car it's so easy and cheap.
Exchange rate is also the best its ever been. I have traveled all over Europe, middle-east and Asia and nobody beats the Japanese quality of service and omotonashi.
If you add up the costs, like others have said, it basically is the same as a regular economy fare. Just plan and take the likes of ANA, JAL, Singapore or Delta and you will find comparable costs when you add all the luggage, seat selection, food, drink fees. Yes, you even had to buy water and they did not offer hot water. They said with a smile that hot water was not on the menu so you can't make your cup noodle.

If you're only visiting the basic tourist areas, there will usually be transport to where you want to go. However, if you have any special shop or place you want to go to, especially in the outer districts, you can easily be making several transfers and walking an hour or more when the taxi is very reasonably priced.
