Had to add a laptop cooling pad which fixed the shutdowns but I ended up returning it anyway. Got the similarly specced Lenovo Legion laptop which hasn't had any cooling issues even without a cooling pad.

That's what I would have thought. Hp cooling isn't very renowned

Specially because they kept the same chassis as last generation (not designed to cool the 13900hx + a 175 watts GPU). That is why the HP has been so cheap this current generation compared to the competition.

The Omen models with RTX 4070 and below are Ok, but if you want the RTX 4080/4090, then you should pay a little more and get the Legion as mentioned above.

I just returned mine today. I fixed the issue where it restarts by updating the bios but the games just had this screen tearing issue
