I just let my subscription expire and make sure I have a saved backup file. Then I activate one of these new subscriptions and open the data file with it.

They shouldn't be an issue. I used to buy the CD's with the 1 year subscription. Never really do anything with the CD, but the subscription just add the additional amount to your existing. So if you're buying 1 year. You'll just get one year added.

So you can renew early.

I believe you can only renew early if it's less than 6 months before it expires.

Note that these cards do expire after a couple of years if not used...

Still using Quicken 2013 here. Works great. No subscription. Obviously, none of the internet stuff works anymore. Stock price updates worked until a few years ago. Everything else works. Most reports/graphs are "last 12 months" and those all work.

I'm waiting for a good F/LOSS investment management tool becomes available on my main OS, Linux. Used beancounter for about a decade - probably not what the typical MS-Windows user needs/wants. I'll dump Quicken and all MS-Windows stuff. It is the last reason I have for MS-Windows. If all you do is manage a checkbook/register, then there are plenty of options today.
KMyMoney, HomeBank, and GnuCash are the main options, but there are lots of others. If you are willing to use a cloudy service (I'm not), then there are many more. Many of these support bank ofx transactions, I hear. I've never used that even with Quicken. There's something about maintaining registers for different accounts manually that makes tracking spending much clearer.

I just enter the new code each year (even before it expires) and it extends my expiration date by 1 year. They try to throw in an extra month if I commit to something which I usually decline.

Yeah, I bought it last year from Newegg around September and used it in April when my subscription was up. I think I'm going to grab this from Walmart because I have a Walmart credit card and will get another 5% off.

Then I'll just hold on to it until next April to use the code. Personally, I hate the yearly subscription fees, but the software has gotten a bit better over the last few years.

Saaaaame here! Still nothing better! No chance I'm going to any subscription based version! Simply have no need for it.

Some of us are ok spending $3 or less monthly to download 100s of transactions. But I get it if you only have a few accounts. I personally rather spend all that time it takes to manually input on other things so $3 monthly is worth it to me.

It's not F/LOSS, but Moneydance is an option out there [moneydance.com]. It's a one-time purchase ($65 currently) which gives you up to 2 years of updates (but you can keep using your data files). Transaction downloads are separate and are available via a subscription from Plaid (that costs money, $4/month or $40/year). As an alternative, they offer a $90/year subscription which includes software updates and transaction downloads.

Better prices around black friday into january. But not bad if you need to renew now. Don't know if it's still true but you could buy these codes up to 2 years in advance and they would still work. You can enter the codes online to renew within 6 months of your current expiration (I did this last month with a code I bought on cyber monday (the monday after black friday)).

I have so many account and so many custom memos/transaction names/categories/etc that there is no help from downloading transactions. No getting away from the organizational control of manual entry.
