How does this M1 Pro compare to current M3?
This seems like it could be a better deal than MB Air. Would there be a significant difference from a purely performance standpoint?
I'm seeing 1 available listed as "New in stock". is there a chance this is actually new-old stock and not Refurb?

This is Micro Center refurbished, not Apple refurbished. So most likely used

Better in long-term tasks, worse in short, bursty workloads (assuming both have 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD). The M3 is a good deal faster but thermal throttling on the MBA after many minutes of intense rendering or such will neuter those gains. Better screen and speakers as well, but that's just MBP vs MBA. I would personally take this over the MBA *unless* you live in a cooler climate that will naturally help the MBA below thermal throttling longer or you want as light of a laptop as possible.
The M4 just got released on the iPad Pro and it looks like it could be the next massive leap since the M1.
If you can wait, I'd say wait 3-6 months and see what happens when it's released on Macs. You'll either see a huge reason to get that, or there will be a lot of people selling M1-M3 stuff and trying to clear stock.

I would wait until WWDC, they might limit new AI features to M3 and M4

I'm ready for it with my M3 but it's still a month away!.
But I don't think Apple will limit to just M3 and M4. Google did limit their in-phone AI to the new flagship Pixel 8 and above but that would alienate way too many Apple users if Apple made it M3 and up since New Air is M2 based and ton of people are still on M1 and M2.
The NeuroEngine on M1 is said to be 3x slower than M4 (38 TOPS) while M1 was 11 TOPS. Should be good enough. A lot of AI work (especially LLM) is still GPU driven on the METAL API today and you can have a very capable M1 Max with high GPU count also.
Maybe Apple will actually use the NeuroEngine wiith their local LLM models though.

I mean, we are talking Apple here. They will do absolutely anything to make the new feature exclusive to as few devices as possible.

Unless something has changed in the past 4 months, these are Apple refurbs. My open box refurb from Microcenter was an Apple refurbished device and Apple updated the purchase date and I got the full warranty.

Just look at Apple Pencil pro compatibility.
Oh damn it is good point about the Apple Pen Pro.... that was a lame and annoying thing to do. Same for the new Magic Keyboard. At least make it so you can use the existing magic keyboard!!!???
