A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

I was disappointed when I was flipping through the satellite guide last night, and for whatever reason that was listed on a sport channel, but it wanted me to pay $5 when I selected it.

I'd pay that. Rock 'n Roll history, man! Like Born to Boogie with Marc Bolan, Ringo Starr, and Elton John. A must see.

Yup that's the one! The first 3/4 of the movie goes through the history of the recording studio and how many awesome albums were recorded using it (Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Nirvana's "Nevermind", sooo many more). The last 1/4 of it focuses on the fact that Dave Grohl purchased it and got a whole bunch of his musician buddies to record an album using it. It was pretty bad ass. There's one point where I really laughed.... Pat Smear (the Germs, Nirvana, Foo Fighters) is playing with Dave, Krist Novoselic and Paul McCartney. Pat says something like "I look over and Krist is rocking out like he does, and then I look over and Dave's rocking out too. And then I'm like 'Oh, wait, Paul McCartney's here?!' " lol If you get a chance, go to Youtube and type in Dave Grohl 2013 SXSW speech. It's almost 50 minutes but it's so insightful, inspiring and funny.

I don't doubt that I'll see it some way in the reasonable future.

"The Master" - As fantastic as "There Will Be Blood" was, this is the polar opposite. 1/5

"Swimming to Cambodia" - It was stronly recommended to me by a friend. I think my friend hates me or something. 1.5/5

Also a few online docs from the "Vice Guide" series - where they show western reporters in some pretty sketchy situations:
"Inside North Korea" - 4/5
"Conflict Minerals, Rebels and Child Soldiers in Congo" - 3/5
"The Cannibal Warlords of Liberia" - 3.5/5
I liked Swimming to Cambodia when it first came out but I'm not sure it would hold up as well now.

Sleepwalk With Me - A little slow in places but funny in others. It's about a guys real life struggle to make it as a comedian, while juggling a relationship with his long term girlfriend and ignoring his severe sleepwalking problems. The routine he does about his sleepwalking fiascoes is funnier than the movie but still, not bad. 2.5/5

Playing For Keeps - Didn't expect much and it was just a fun movie to watch.

The Sessions - Really liked this one, Helen Hunt as a sex surrogate to a guy with an iron lung machine.
