I was just a victim of credit card fraud

10,780 154 February 15, 2011 at 08:37 AM
Last night before bed I checked my email and chase sent me something saying they declined a 59.99 charge from some place. I called them up, and apparently there was a 34.99 charge right after that, and another 34.99 charge from a different company, and they were using my old exp date. They gave me 800 numbers for both companies and I called them up.

The first couldn't tell me what was attempted because it was in the decline list, but she gave me the ip (in Louisiana) and email ([email protected]) used. This obviously was not me. Called the second company and they wouldn't give me any specific information, but they did say "I" tried to buy a sub to blacksonblondes.

Called chase back, confirmed all this stuff w/them, they cancelled my account, are sending a new card w/in 24/48 hours, an envelope from their fraud department which I will use to communicate w/them and/or open my own case against whoever did this, and are contacting all 3 credit bureaus to make sure nothing bad is on my report.

I have to say.. the way chase dealt w/it was pretty awesome. They were quick, knowledgeable, everything.

You should also alert the credit bureaus that you just had ID theft, so if someone is trying to open an account under your name, they're flagged. I don't remember how I did this... I think the bank did it for me... so maybe Chase can do this for you also.

I wouldn't be so sure about doing this. I know people that had their identity stolen and after they did this, all it did was add 5 minutes to the credit application process and a much higher interest rate.

Dontknow I don't think I've opened an account during the time it was flagged on my credit report. I think it only sticks for 6 months also... But I didn't have an issue with higher interest as a result of that.

They already said they'd do that, so I should be good to go there. No actual charges against my card were filed.

Like I said, I was extremely impressed w/how well chase handled it.

You've obviously never called a credit card company for anything before. They made YOU call the places to find out WTF was going on and call chase back, that's not good customer service.

I've had a double-charge happen once and my account get stolen once. Both times I called the CC company, after some time on the phone, everything was resolved, I didn't have to go chasing ghosts. I think chase made you work, bad CS Dontknow

kind of what i was thinking. i haven't had my cards stolen, just extra charges by shady businesses and such, and i always just call them and they take care of everything.

When it happened to me last year, Chase actually called me to let me know about the suspicious activity. I had been at the grocery store not long before and confused as to why my card wasn't working.

When they called me, they asked whether specific charges from the last few days were valid, and then sent me a letter with a couple more that hadn't shown up yet.

I had that happen too, several times in the past.

Though my charges were valid (made by me), but I can totally see why it triggered the CC company fraud alert (got an automated call, and had the option of talking to someone real if the charges weren't clear or not made by me) Dontknow

Yep, same here. Except I'll usually notice the charges first as I monitor everything online. If something's amiss, I'll find out within a few hours.
