Wow this is a good price. I wonder... some people have said that you don't need a costco card to buy liquor? I live on the EC so not sure if this applies to our costcos as well.

On the topic of whisky, has anyone bought the HP Thor that just came out? I know only 1500 are being sent to the US and this is the first of four in the Norse Gods collection. Since HP usually has great limited edition releases, I was thinking about picking this up as a nice artistic piece... but after the Octomore 4.2 Comus I have no money. =(

Although honestly, I'd probably get flamed for this but I don't taste very much of a difference between black label vs blue label. What I don't really like is how Johnnie Walker doesn't make their own whisky. They just get the goodies from different distillery, blend it and call it JW. I went to a Johnnie Walker taste test event and this is what I thought: red taste like crap, + OJ or Ginger Ale and it's yummy. Black is everyday whisky, Gold taste $50 better than black and a little spicier, and Blue taste $100 better than Black. I also tasted massive amount of marketing and labeling on Gold and Blue.

I did picked up a bottle of Gold for 49.97 from the Carlsbad Costco the other day since my gf likes it (which I really think she just liked the marketing aspect of it). $119.99 is very good price for the Blue label if you can taste the difference. Wink

Otherwise I would wait for this to come back http://archive.slickdeals.net/f/632421-Macallan-Kirkland-branded-18-Year-Single-Malt-Scotch-750ml-60-Costco-B-M? drool

Great price if you're looking to give it as a gift to someone who only knows JWB is marketed at great whisky. Not a great price if you want to drink it yourself or give it to a whisky drinker. For less money you can get a much better bottle. JW spends millions on advertising...but what you get in the bottle is not top shelf.

I can taste a pretty significant difference just between the Black and Gold. The Blue is also very good, but I don't think the price is justified by the smaller increase in taste.

People would be better off spending $20 less and getting a great single malt as opposed to the JW blend that is chill filtered (bad) has caramel coloring added (bad) and is not bottled at 46% ABV (JWB is 40% or 43% = bad.) JWB, while drinkable, is all about marketing and not about quality. For $120 a bottle it should be amazing...and it's just a nice whisky blend. $100 buys you an excellent single malt that is done the right way.

That's just what blended scotch is. It's typically a half and half mixture, half of a blend of single malts, and half of just filler alcohol with neutral taste. A notable exception is Johnnie Walker Green Label, which is still blended scotch but is a blend of ALL single malt scotches. I happen to be a fan of blended scotch and while I like single malts as well, I find it hard to compare the two. I don't view one as better than the other, I just view them as.... different.

So what would recommend for an excellent single malt?
