Are we talking domestic or international "1-2 million defensive uses of firearms a year"? Does a buck charging a trophy hunter count as defensive? Is this a catch-all statistic that includes officers? Please source the figure for me.

As for your implication to the contrary, at least for Kleck survey the DGU were all civilians against a human threat.

I know Taurus makes either a 7 or an 8 round .357... But is there anything with 10rds in a revolver that isn't a .22?

OK, I can understand the million-and-plus estimates now since just brandishing a gun automatically classifies as a DGU.

The numbers for defensive use are all over the map but even the most pessimistic numbers put the figure at an order of magnitude more than the gun homicide rate.

It certainly would be hard to define every instance. Clearly if someone starts shooting and you shoot back that would count. Brandishing a gun is harder to say. I think an honest observer would see that in at least some cases showing a gun would stop a potential issue. The opportunistic bad guy will run away. Other times when a gun was brandished the "bad guy" may have never meant any harm and was misidentified as a bad guy. Yet other times you might have a case were both people were in the wrong but one chickened out when the gun was shown. Basically it's hard to say and I know many pro-gun people will say the high side numbers are almost certainly over estimating. However, the low side numbers suggest the gun is still used far more often to defend than to kill.

Did you assume that a DGU requires that someone fires the gun? If brandishing a firearm saves me or my family from harm, shouldn't that count?

Heard a discussion on the radio. The caller was stopped in his tracks when the guy he was going to fight pulled out a gun. Took the DJ a few questions to realize the caller was the aggressor.

I find it quite irritating to be told I'm paranoid for wanting to carry. Some people seem to think that if they feel safe then everyone should. When the Atlanta Thrashers were here, and before that the Knights, I used to go to games all of the time. The areas around the arena are not the safest neighborhoods and the games usually let out late. Once I made a wrong turn and within 1 block knew I was in a sketchy area. I immediately had my pistol in my lap at the ready. Just as I was looking for a good place to turn around, an SUV came up behind me from nowhere at high speed, I started to freak until they hit me with the lights. It was the Red Dogs. The Atlanta narcotic task force. They saw a couple of white guys and assumed we were copping dope. After I was held at gunpoint because of my gun, eventually they confirmed we were coming from the game, were not drug seeking or criminals, they helped us get back to the main road. They warned us about the high crime in the area we were stopped, car jackings, shootings, etc. He acknowledged it was good that I was prepared but to avoid the area next time.

If you feel safe without a gun, great. But quit trying to assume anyone that wants one for protection is paranoid. You aren't paranoid if they really are after you.
