Cheap way to get internet connection for a week

2,870 814 April 27, 2013 at 09:35 PM
I need to be at a residence that has no internet connection, for a week. How can I get internet connection for cheap? MiFi 3g/4g all seem to require atleast $100 worth of device to be purchased first. This is just one time that I need connection in a house which is vacant, so no phone no internet. what are my options? I have a simple phone w/o data /internet capability. TIA
need it at house, can't go to starbucks etc, since need to work from home.

Do you need it at your house or just general? Mcdonalds has free wifi as well as some malls.

panera, starbucks, and most other coffee shops should have it - public libraries also should have wifi (and even computers/printers usually)

or you could buy DSL for a month.. for their minimum speed the price should be $15-20, and then you will need a DSL modem, which can be bought for $20 ish as well, and do the "set it up myself" option to get it working ASAP instead of having them install stuff

actually, if you have phone service, you might even be able to use dialup (some laptops have the modem built-in)

If you have a cell phone, and its android, I'm sure you can turn it into a hotspot. Google xda-developers for more info. Very informative forum.

Depending on where you live freedompop could be an option.

Offer the neighbor $20 to use their wifi signal, if it reaches you.

That's the issue.. But you can check clearwars coverage maps to see if the area is covered by their 4g wimax. Their new device can also go on sprints 3g network again you would have to check coverage maps(I think its an extra $3 a month )

As for the neighbors I doubt you have anything to worry about but still that is easily fix with a VPN service (for the love of god don't use tor)

As an agent you really should have a way to get online from anywhere. You klnever know when a client will ask to see some house they seen online. I set my mom up with a tablet with a 4g card in it and tethering because she was always needing to get inline.

You can fix the security issues easily with a VPN on your end. Don't count out the neighbors without asking first. Assuming you know them a little it might be pretty simple.

Since your in seattle you should have decent wireless coverage. How much bandwidth do you need and how fast?

The problem with going into a Verizon and buying a Mifi like device is the price you see advertised assumes a contract, which is not what your wanting.

You could buy a mifi device from ebay and then go the prepaid route

Let me help you here. Repeat after me: THE INTERNET IS PUBLIC. It is not a private network. The email you send and receive is clear text which is sent in public.

Encrypted WiFi only protects a local network. It does not protect your Internet connection. Anybody who makes you think so is uninformed.
