Cheap way to get internet connection for a week

2,870 814 April 27, 2013 at 09:35 PM in Internet & Websites
I need to be at a residence that has no internet connection, for a week. How can I get internet connection for cheap? MiFi 3g/4g all seem to require atleast $100 worth of device to be purchased first. This is just one time that I need connection in a house which is vacant, so no phone no internet. what are my options? I have a simple phone w/o data /internet capability. TIA
need it at house, can't go to starbucks etc, since need to work from home.

Let me help you here. Repeat after me: THE INTERNET IS PUBLIC. It is not a private network. The email you send and receive is clear text which is sent in public.

Encrypted WiFi only protects a local network. It does not protect your Internet connection. Anybody who makes you think so is uninformed.
Not unless its work related emails, than vpn comes into play. Man.........you're out of options.

Well under that scenario your message would be encrypted from your computer in the vpn to your company network. Where it would be decrypted and put out onto the public internet unencrytped. You would have to encrypt the company email to itself to have it's contents protected the entire time.

VPN is still a good idea. That way you don't know where people are going, what they are logging into etc. Especially over say an open wifi connection you can learn a ton about your neighbor by listening for traffic of others.

And if you're using a VPN, then guess what? It doesn't matter if your WiFi is encrypted or not!

Offer the neighbor $20 to use their wifi signal, if it reaches you.
Why offer anything? Find an unsecured wifi. Use https and a certificate verifier and you are secure.

Go to mcdonalds and buy a coffee and use their internet. It is only a week.

You people have been arguing about it for almost a week now. Did the OP find a solution, or is that why he hasn't come back yet to check on his thread?

:-). Nice one.
I always argue against unnecessary security paranoia. Encrypting the first network link of a public network connection is pretty stupid, unless you also use a LAN.
