Athletes at Rio Olympics 'will literally be swimming in human crap'

http://www.cbssports.com/olympics...uman-crap/

Seven years ago the Rio de Janeiro government promised to clean up the water before the 2016 Olympics.
Not only did they fail to clean it up -- it has actually gotten worse.
According to the New York Times, recent tests by government and independent scientists have found the city's waters to be full of diarrhea-causing rotaviruses and drug-resistant "super bacteria," among other pathogens.
This is the same water in which Olympians will sail, windsurf and -- yes -- swim starting on Aug. 5.
"Foreign athletes will literally be swimming in human crap, and they risk getting sick from all those microorganisms," local pediatrician Dr. Daniel Becker told the Times. "It's sad, but also worrisome."

Ok, I'm aware that I'm not very bright, but how come most of the Olympic medal counts show gbr in 2nd in front of China....with fewer medals?

It's been like that for two days and it's making me even more crazy.

Olympic champions obviously earn multi-million-dollar endorsement deals. Michael Phelps [goodhousekeeping.com] apparently received $5 million [fxnewscall.com] for his Under Armour deal, and we bet Simone Biles [goodhousekeeping.com] made a pretty penny for that Tide Pods commercial. But, you may not realize, the earnings don't stop there.

Besides chewing on their medals [goodhousekeeping.com] and accepting those weird statues [goodhousekeeping.com], top athletes usually earn prize money from their country's Olympic committee. For the United States, gold, silver and bronze earn $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 respectively. That means Phelps will earn $140,000 in Rio alone and a whopping $650,000 across all five of his games appearances.

(Azerbaijan pays $510,000 for a gold medal)

A Brazilian judge has ordered U.S. swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen not to leave the country, saying they gave conflicting accounts of how they were robbed at gunpoint outside the Rio Games at the weekend.

Judicial sources say they believe the pair are no longer in Brazil.

*snip*

The judicial sources said police were concerned that Lochte had said only one man was involved in the robbery while his team mate testified that several men had robbed them.

The source also said police were puzzled by video footage of the swimmers returning to the Athletes Village physically well and joking with one another.

Update...

Quote :
The U.S. Olympic Committee said Wednesday evening that swimmers Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were removed from their return flight to the U.S. by Brazilian authorities.

*snip*

In a statement released on the court's website Wednesday, Blanc said that in Lochte's testimony to police, he said the athletes were stopped early Sunday by one robber who demanded all their money: $400. Blanc said that Feigen, however, told police that the athletes were surprised by multiple robbers but that only one was armed.

Security footage published by the Daily Mail showed the men arriving at Rio de Janeiro's Athletes' Village appearing unfazed by their ordeal. Braziilans have reacted with anger to what many perceived as a false account of a robbery and began conjecturing over what might have happened.

3 days left till the games r over. the last 3 days(including today) are a must watch. why? because the games are ending. not only that, but sunday........

are the closing ceremonies meaning we must prevent a ratings disaster by watching the ceremonies since theyre competing with WWE summerslam and most of all "Fear the Walking Dead".

today is the men's basketball semifinals, tomorrow is the soccer championship, sunday is the basketball finals and mens marathon(winner is the toughest male athlete in these games)

Why, because they go the farthest? That's a terrible lack of understanding of the sport of running. Some of those guys move up to the marathon because they can't hack it at the lower distances. They can't do back to back to back 4 minute miles so they slow the pace and do it for 26. Not saying it's not hard, but the number of miles is by no means the measure of how tough a runner is. The 5000 and 10,000 are grueling races.

After an amazing Paralympics in London, with most venues being sold out, the Brazilian Paralympics are being scaled way back due to poor ticket sales. Some venues have sold as low as only 12% of their tickets.

There has also been a delay in sending the athletes their funds so they can afford to travel to Brazil. This delay by the Paralympics Committee means that some athletes won't be able to travel to Brazil in time for the games.

(just heard this on NPR, didn't look for a news link)
