Trader Joe's food review thread

31,436 2,810 August 24, 2008 at 07:09 PM in Grocery (3)
I've been trying out various food products from Trader Joe's. Thought a food review thread might be fun. Please do add your own reviews of Trader Joe's foods/products.

So far...

Trader Joe's Chocolate (Product of Belgium): Really nice and a good value too.

Shepard's Pie: This one was a huge disappointment. It was watery, almost like soup and had very little meat in it. Hubby couldn't even eat it. The pic makes it look so good, the reality was a shock.

Chicken Enchiladas in Salsa Verde: Very tasty, have had this one a couple of times. Not bad value either. Cheaper than TV dinners at other stores. *Note: The only pic I could find is not the best, it looks much nicer IRL on a plate.

Chicken and Chile Verde Burritos:
Not bad, would eat again but not as nice as the enchiladas. Would be nicer with a sauce on top.

Chicken and Gorgonzola with Lentils:
Not my thing, found the chicken a bit bland for me, although the lentils were nice.

Mandarin Orange Chicken: This one is very nice and pretty easy to fix. Just put a 1/4 cup of oil in a pan, brown the chicken and then dump in the sauce and serve over rice (sold separately). To make it a little healthier, I took the chicken out of the oil, patted it to remove the excess oil and then mixed in the sauce. You can also bake the chicken in the oven, the instructions are on the package, it's just been too hot to fire up the oven here. Just bought more today. It's enough for a family of four or you can just do half for 1 or 2 people, as it comes with two sauce packets.

No big deal for me since I don't like bananas at all! I do miss eating grapes and oranges

The brand I bought from Amazon got pretty high ratings, Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil http://www.amazon.com/Nutiva-Orga...oconut+Oil
I have that same brand CO and I use it to scramble eggs and fry chicken. I can taste the slight coconut taste but I don't mind it. CO has wonderful benefits.

I don't miss bananas either, I don't like bananas, but OMG I miss mangos, oh my mangos. Crying And they're the raw sour ones that I like. Coverlaugh

I eat mostly strawberries and blackberries when it's on sale. The strawberries from TJs are so good. And the price isn't bad, I bought the big package for $4.99 instead of waiting for the supermarket's $2.49 price for the smaller one.

Man, I can't get over the CO scent in regular food. It is definitely good for you but still can't do it. laugh out loud And I didn't try the shakes with CO...it's supposed to taste good, but I don't like shakes.

This is a recipe that works great for a low carb diet and it's really yummy.

It's meant to be cooked on a grill but the other night I did it in the oven and the flavors were great, it just didn't have that wonderful caramelized crust that cooking it on a BBQ grill gives it. But either way it's a great dish.

(Didn't know if posting the full recipe on SD would be allowed, so here's the link, it's a legit website that I've visited over the years with no problems)

I'm not allowed to go to Carson City or Reno without coming home with some of their lamb for my hubby. Bibby tried to fill one of the little kid shopping carts with the mini pumpkins, I had to limit her to two. She snagged one at the commissary the other day though, she loves them. Somehow a spaghetti squash was in there too, I've never had one so that should be interesting. I need to remember a cooler with me next time I go so we can try some of the frozen stuff. It looks good but we live an hour drive away and in summer I'm afraid it would melt/thaw. I have a list of what has been recommended to try.

I'm going to miss them when we go back to Alaska though.
I did a butternut squash last night and it was a PITA as the skin was really tough. Next time I'm going to buy the pre-cubed chunks in a bag. DH really liked it though. The recipe was pretty simple, put some olive oil on it then a balsamic vinegar and honey mix and baked it in the oven for about 35 or 40 minutes until it was tender. Be sure to line the pan with foil or you'll never get that baked on olive oil/vinegar/honey mix off the pan.

Be careful with the fruit, don't eat too much in one day, as all that sugar will prevent you from losing weight. At least that's what messed me up, too many blueberries during the season. It was only when I quit eating them that the pounds started dropping again. Doh

nod that's why i toss the entire squash (other hard squashes as well) into the crockpot. no muss, no fuss, yummy goodness. can add seasoning when ready to eat

or you can place whole in the oven on a baking sheet

the precubed chunks in bag don't taste right to me, perhaps it's just me. i don't buy

Wow, nice looking recipe. I pinned it. Big Grin

I know! I'm slowly losing because I'm eating wayy too much fruit, as silly as it sounds. I need to cut back. The blackberries, I counted about 18 per meal (once a day). It was getting expensive, too. EEK!

TJ's Butternut Squash organic, low sodium soup. It's slightly too sweet for me but that may be due to my diet, not having much sugar these days. It has a good flavor but I really want to add a little salt to it, which is kind of defeating the purpose of buying low sodium foods. laugh out loud
