Your lawn probably has compacted clay, that makes it hard to germinate and grow grass. You'd need to till it and sow the seed and put compost on top of it.

in my opinion - its an inferior product - killed all of my seedling one year - I have never had a problem with Miracle Grow.

Top soil is literally just the surface/top foot or so of the dirt scraped from construction sites. It's fine for growing grass or filling holes in your yard, but you'll want a nice blend of peat...

How do you participate to get the 20% cash back? Lowe's doesn't let me order online and pickup in store. Is there a way to get cash back if you buy it in-store?

It’s a lot cheaper at HD, $2 for 1cf bag (25% more). I picked up 20 bags yesterday. Will probably pickup another 20 tomorrow.

It's all locally or regionally made and not from one source. Even then, each bag might be different from each other with a little more sticks/rocks.

Neither has any dirt (soil). It's all plant matter. According to the label, you're getting peat moss, "processed forestry products" (likely bark and/or wood chips), and a little compost.

I bought both Costco and Lowes. Costco has most compost while Lowes had more dirt than compost. If you intend to mix with soil, the Costco deal is better.
