I'll contribute my data point then - decent contact with chip and dram on my WD SN750 black. My only complain is while the size and weight of the heat sink is good, the surface area can be improved...

Just to nitpick, trim doesn't work on MacOS but that's specific to Macs.

Leaving cover off is not a good option. Surface area of NVMe is much smaller than the surface area of the aluminum enclosure for heat exchange.

You'll want to clone the drive, mounted externally or internally, but *may* need to use migration or boot repair tools if you're moving Windows from a conventional drive or SSD to an NVMe drive....
