A little practice and it is pretty easy to avoid. You can absolutely launch lures with a bait caster, hence the name.

Absolutely agree. This is a workhorse reel. Beginner or someone who wants a grab and go reel. 12lb mono on this will catch all freshwater fish. Minimal backlash.
