Everyone new to the kamado grills has the same problem. Takes a few times to figure it out. You just have to close the vents earlier to bring it up slower. Once it goes too hot, it's near impossible...

Same, went from a normal Akorn, to a KJ Big Joe, and a lot of times, I miss the Akorn. Quicker to heat up and used less charcoal.

Why can you not use this for basic heat?? It’s a portable grill slash fire pit. If you just want a place to contain fire, it can do that.
