I got this as a gift before I got a real home brewing kit. This is a piece of junk and a waste of money. You are better off taking your $30 and applying to a real home brewing set.

Plastic is fine if one uses the correct grade. I brew using a food-grade 5 gallon water jug and they out just as good as any of my other carboys.
