how does this compare to the Sigma 18-250mm MACRO HMS? (I got a T3i)
I got that at full retail $425 after tax :( and can still return it. (though I would have to eat the $50 I spent on filters)....

It takes great pics. Macros not as good as dedicated 18-55. Just as good up to 200 as the 55-250. One other consideration is filters/hoods are compatible between 18-55, 55-250. For me if I had to...

I prefer it up to 200...for me, I feel it has better, sharper corners. I do prefer having the 55-250 with me for the extra 50mm, if I am carrying all my lenses.
Personal preference.
