Yes, but not with the same camera. I had the 18-200 w/ the (12MP) D300 and thought it was adequate. & like you say it was sharp (on the D300) to 100-150mm, nothing I'd worry about if I wasn't...

To me heavier the weight is better than light weight camera. Light weight camera shakes in most hands. As far as considering you felt this is heavy camera and being novice you might needs to consider...
