Yeah I mean even if you had to buy a $20-$35 adapter, it could be worth it if you already have a solid set of headphones you use to listen to music and such. I ended up buying the Sony wireless...

I didn't either until I realized there was extra stuff in the bottom of the box. I noticed the headset and noticed the 3.5mm plug on it, and thought "that's cool".

Not just game audio, but all of your audio, so that means TV too. That means you have to have your controller on to watch TV, but not a huge deal.

What about a pair of Beats or other stereo headphones though? If it was just possible through headsets that supported a non-standard connector, then it would make sense why they never advertised it...

I'm not so sure about that. I have a SkullCandy headset that uses the same connector as the originally included Microsoft headset without the need of any kind of adapter and I can get game/voice...

I wouldn't bother with PC unless you are really into MMOs, MOBAs, etc. or the high variety factor intrigues you. For shooters, console is where it is at.

Xbox was $350. Live is roughly 3 bucks/month. Elite controller was $150. Games are $50-$60 apiece normally, or around $30 if you can wait a month or two.

PC if you care about your gaming future.
For console get a PS4. Better hardware, better/more exclusives, they seem to be more gamer conscious whereas Microsoft has tried to do some stupid stuff.
