If you only need if for household purposes, I'd go with the Ryobi. Even if you assume the HF is of comparable quality (dubious at best), 12" is overkill for home use. You'll end up saving a good chunk of money buying 10" blades, as opposed to 12". And since the 10" is a slider, it can likely cut any dimension you're likely to encounter.
I've got a 10" Hitachi (non-slider) that I picked up for about $25 less than this deal. When I saw this posted I began to regret my purchase, but ultimately think I made the right decision. I don't need the extra capacity that the sliding function brings, and the Hitachi is quite compact. Saving space and money trumps having a cool feature that I don't need. I think the same logic applies to your decision, the 12" is probably more than you need.
I bought this exact saw on BF two years ago and it came with the free stand for $169. This is easily one of the best purchases I have made. The fact this it slides allows you to make the longer cuts you need on 2x6's and up. Having the ability to slide out basically removes the need for a 12" saw like you used to need to make those cuts.
I've used this saw for 4 different laminate wood floor installs, building a chicken coop and several trim jobs as well as cutting limbs into campfire lengths. It has plenty of power and is built with great quality.
The only issue I have with it is the laser. It lines up about 1/8" off the blade, so you can't put the light on your line to cut. IMO this makes the laser worthless. I have not looked into adjusting it or anything.
Being a big name like Ryobi and having Home Depot's return policy, I would absolutely recommend you buy this. If for some reason its not for you, you can simply return in.

Just bought one to replace my Crastfman version. The craftsman is garbage that is always off a degree or two on a basic crosscut. It's been very frustrating. Hopefully this one does a better job.

Great bang for the buck. I have this saw and it was a huge upgrade from my old basic 10" craftsman non-slider. Yeah it's homeowner grade, but you're not going to get anything else this nice for this price. I put mine on a ridgid folding stand when they were on sale for $99.
I paid $149 for this saw during a post xmas sale a couple years ago, this is a fantastic deal.
Anyone who how the harbor freight 12" slider would compare to this WRT quality for household purposes

will I need to buy a stand for this? if so, any recommendations for a very casual diy'er?
There's no requirement for using it on a stand, but the stand makes it much easier from a comfort level standpoint so you can walk right up to the saw...and holds the saw in place. But if your back is up to it, you can just use the saw on the floor. Or put in on a standard dining table...just put a quilt or something under it to avoid scratching the table top.
Most stands will work...they are usually universal. I bought the Rigid stand over Christmas when they were $99, and it is a good stand. One of my contractors has the Ryobi stand and it is pretty good for 100 bucks at Home Depot...it should be fine for home use or casual DYI purposes. But it doesn't have wheels so not as mobile. But not like the stands weigh 100 lbs or anything. The stands with wheels are helpful if you are moving the stand with the saw on it from room to room. Hope that helps.

Just a heads up if you're looking for a bit more quality keep checking Big Sky Tool. Yes I know those are refurbished and this isn't, but I picked up a 12 inch Hitachi w laser for 254 when they had free shipping on it sold my old DeWalt on CL and upgraded to that.
