Anyway, you have any proof of this? I'd really like to know. Or perhaps I just got lured in by troll bait...
Upon plugging it in, Hard Disk Sentinel reports that the model ID is WD40EFRX-68N32N0. Google searches indicate that it's a Red drive. YMMV.

Were they red drives?

Thank you! How do you go about opening it? Not sure which model I should look up on YouTube. Just got one.
As a caution, connect the usb and try the drive first before open it. In case the drive is bad, you haven't void your warranty or return.

Just got it opened and out and it's Red! Just pure beauty to my eyes. Going to go back and get two more. Thanks again for your help.
I did test it and it works in my Synology NAS.
The case comes apart so cleanly I think you could send it back in whole and no one would ever know it was opened.
Mine was red as well.

I agree it's worth hanging on just in case. This is seriously a great price for these red drives.

The user manual for the easystore series mentions nothing about encryption.
The user manual for the My Book series explicitly mentions encryption. And, there is also a user manual for "unencrypted" My Book drives.

Maybe WD learned that many people don't like mandatory hardware encryption?
