Several owners are reporting that the PC4-2400 RAM that comes with the system by default is an ECC memory module. See this post for details.

The memory speed is limited by BIOS to 2133.

Someone asked if this comes with any OS at this price. Short answer: no. Long answer: of course not at this price.

Also, this CPU is straight 4 cores, no HT, if that matters to anyone.

If anyone's interested in Remote Management, this server has Intel AMT 11.0 (upgradable to 11.6 via an update on Dell's page).

You can configure it by hitting F12 immediately upon boot and selecting "Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension."

Once you've set the IP, you can access it this way:
http://192.168.1.100:16992

*Substitute your IP, but the port (16992) is correct.

What you'll see is a pretty decent site, but it gets better. A brilliant program to use for AMT is MeshCommander, which adds considerably more than the above site, including Remote Desktop:
http://www.meshcommander.com/meshcommander

Click "Overview Presentation" there to see what it can do, but you don't have to keep using the program if you don't want, since, as is shown in the WebStorage tutorial video, you can upload a small file of Mesh Commander's into the AMT firmware to replace Intel's default site. It has almost all of the same capabilities as the Mesh Commander program, but through the convenience of a Web site.

Oh, and you can play chess, too (see the end of the video).

This thing amazes me, and it's mentioned all over Intel's site, like here, so it's fully sanctioned:https://software.intel.com/en-us/...4-released

Hi Everyone, strongly interested in this and possibly turning this to a VR ready machine. Wonder if it's possible to add a GT 1050Ti from one of the recent deals to this to make it a decent gaming machine? Thanks for any help and comment Smilie

Looking into more, this only has a 290W PSU, so may not be able to support a graphic card like GT1050Ti?

I believe it's possible, just usually not recommended. The 290W PSU is right at the border of the minimum 300W recommended for the GTX1050Ti (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/d...ications). Performance will be slightly compromised compared to a comparable i7 desktop CPU, but if your expectations are not too high it could be a good bang for the buck at this price.

EDIT: Actually, the XEON CPU in this server is closer specwise to a core i5-6500 CPU, since it does not have hyperthreading like the i7 line. So you'll want to compare to this model when pricing out a comparable desktop system.

Do not install the 1.0.3 BIOS update if you are currently using or plan to use the M.2 slot. I finished setting up my system, complete with booting Windows 10 from an M.2 SSD. Then I applied the 1.0.3 BIOS update and it no longer recognized the M.2 slot, whether something is plugged into it or not. Downgrading back to 1.0.2 was easy but hopefully Dell brings this functionality back in future BIOS updates.

Thank you very much kenoctech for your help. So it's probably a good idea to good grade the PSU, is it easy to swap out the PSU in this server?

I thought this would be a power machine with the Xeon processor but looks like it's not comparable to the i7? I am also interested in the current Costco Dell i7 24gb Ram RX 480 deal. Understood it's at a much higher price point, but wonder if I really need that to have a good VR ready machine? Or having this plus a 1050ti or 1060 is good enough which would save me ~$500.

Thanks much again for all comments and help! Smilie

Oftentimes these Dell (and other OEM built) computers have proprietary power supplies that cannot be swapped with standard ATX PSUs. I got two of these at work and I'll check tomorrow if that's the case with this model.

There are multiple tiers of Xeon CPUs. This is the E3, one of the lowest tier. Hence the budget price.

Wow, just a few days ago I said "The only thing I'd worry about is if Dell decides that they want to torpedo this incidental support someday. The T30 will see countless BIOS updates over its lifetime, so they'll have plenty of opportunity to do so if they wish."

So maybe that broken-English 1.0.3 release note can be taken in the most negative way possible (discontinuing accidental support)--or it was just an innocent mistake. We probably won't know until 1.0.4.

IMO you would be better served by the $850 Costco deal or other desktop deals that will inevitably come (eg this Acer i7-6700 desktop from Newegg for $680 from Newegg [newegg.com], though I'm personally not a fan a fan of Acer desktops; it's just what was on the frontpage of Newegg just now). Just an example to show that other good desktop deals are readily available.

This Dell Poweredge server line is designed for all-day stability, not performance. It has specific usage cases, and is not really intended for general computing. You have to keep in mind that you would need to add the cost of an operating system, keyboard and mouse, in addition to a better power supply, and performance will still be lower than a comparable desktop CPU and chipset.

UPDATE: I just confirmed that this server will take a standard ATX PSU. But again, if you factor in the cost of swapping the PSU and other things, this becomes less of a bargain for a mainstream desktop/gaming computer.

Installed proxmox, 3 old slow disks that were salvaged from an old HP windows media server, set them up as raidZ with lz4 and a 3 partition ssd for pve boot, l2arc and zil cache. This box is doing great running about 10 VM and lxc so far. When using rsync to migrate TB of data the config sustains 80MB/s not great but faster than I expected on these old 5400 rpm drives, and is super easy to manage.

With all the USB ports it is easy to hang a bunch of cheap 2tb USB drives for backups, templates, and images

I Recommended for a low cost VM host

Anyone find a decent price for an additional 8g to match the one shipped?

Has anyone gotten an order confirmation on this? I have tried twice with my Visa card and the orders ended up on hold with no explanation. I have just tried a third time with PayPal and we will see what happens.

I spoke with a US based Dell sales rep and said that they will not honor this coupon. No accommodation at all!

You might try contacting them via Twitter in the unlikely case that PayPal also fails. Sometimes Twitter reps are a lot more accommodating. It's not like there's much controversy over this one given that the coupon is still active (trying to get a deal which has expired, even if you have a good reason, can be difficult).

Is this the RAM that people got? If so, it's Micron, and it doesn't turn up much on searches.

http://imgur.com/a/lqAAO

What it says on the label:
MTA9ASF1G72AZ-2G3B1ZK
PC4-2400T-ED1-11

How one site described it:
8GB 288P 1RX8 PC4-19200-2400T ECC UDIMM

Which is surprising, since I thought the 2400 was supposed to be non-ECC.

Wait, are you saying that's the RAM that came in the system, or did you add that to your order separately? I'll check the sticks that came with the two I ordered when I get to work.

Neither, I saw it here [ebay.com], where he says that he pulled it from a T30 (it came with the system) to replace it with ECC, which is strange, because I think it's ECC from the little that I could find about it.

Ours definitely is, but I'm remote from the box so am only getting this information indirectly. In our case, the BIOS reads 2133MHz for the memory speed, which matches the top spec for the CPU, as someone pointed out above. But the RAM is the Hynix HMA81GU7AFR8N-UH (according to the Intel AMT screen on the system), which is capable of PC4-2400 (the CPU limits it) and is most definitely [skhynix.com] ECC.

It would seem that Dell has a variety of suppliers. Yours might be something else entirely, but I think they have to be consistent about it being ECC or not.

I just pulled the sticks from the two T30 servers that came last week and mine are the same Micron sticks (MTA9ASF1G72AZ-2G3B1ZK1 - extra 1 refers to slight revision, possibly) as the eBay listing you posted, and you're right, they are listed as ECC RAM by Micron. Here's the URL for the datasheet [micron.com] from Micron. Here's a screenshot [imgur.com] of the datasheet.

And I just ordered two 16GB sticks of ECC RAM yesterday! :/

EDIT: Whoever won that eBay auction just picked up 8GB of Micron ECC RAM for just $28!
