Also, this CPU is straight 4 cores, no HT, if that matters to anyone.

You can configure it by hitting F12 immediately upon boot and selecting "Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension."
Once you've set the IP, you can access it this way:

*Substitute your IP, but the port (16992) is correct.
What you'll see is a pretty decent site, but it gets better. A brilliant program to use for AMT is MeshCommander, which adds considerably more than the above site, including Remote Desktop:
http://www.meshcommand
Click "Overview Presentation" there to see what it can do, but you don't have to keep using the program if you don't want, since, as is shown in the WebStorage tutorial video, you can upload a small file of Mesh Commander's into the AMT firmware to replace Intel's default site. It has almost all of the same capabilities as the Mesh Commander program, but through the convenience of a Web site.
Oh, and you can play chess, too (see the end of the video).
This thing amazes me, and it's mentioned all over Intel's site, like here, so it's fully sanctioned:https://software.intel.
Looking into more, this only has a 290W PSU, so may not be able to support a graphic card like GT1050Ti?

EDIT: Actually, the XEON CPU in this server is closer specwise to a core i5-6500 CPU, since it does not have hyperthreading like the i7 line. So you'll want to compare to this model when pricing out a comparable desktop system.

I thought this would be a power machine with the Xeon processor but looks like it's not comparable to the i7? I am also interested in the current Costco Dell i7 24gb Ram RX 480 deal. Understood it's at a much higher price point, but wonder if I really need that to have a good VR ready machine? Or having this plus a 1050ti or 1060 is good enough which would save me ~$500.
Thanks much again for all comments and help!

Oftentimes these Dell (and other OEM built) computers have proprietary power supplies that cannot be swapped with standard ATX PSUs. I got two of these at work and I'll check tomorrow if that's the case with this model.
There are multiple tiers of Xeon CPUs. This is the E3, one of the lowest tier. Hence the budget price.
So maybe that broken-English 1.0.3 release note can be taken in the most negative way possible (discontinuing accidental support)--or it was just an innocent mistake. We probably won't know until 1.0.4.

This Dell Poweredge server line is designed for all-day stability, not performance. It has specific usage cases, and is not really intended for general computing. You have to keep in mind that you would need to add the cost of an operating system, keyboard and mouse, in addition to a better power supply, and performance will still be lower than a comparable desktop CPU and chipset.
UPDATE: I just confirmed that this server will take a standard ATX PSU. But again, if you factor in the cost of swapping the PSU and other things, this becomes less of a bargain for a mainstream desktop/gaming computer.
With all the USB ports it is easy to hang a bunch of cheap 2tb USB drives for backups, templates, and images
I Recommended for a low cost VM host
Anyone find a decent price for an additional 8g to match the one shipped?
I spoke with a US based Dell sales rep and said that they will not honor this coupon. No accommodation at all!

What it says on the label:
MTA9ASF1G72AZ-2G3B1ZK
PC4-2400T-ED1-11
How one site described it:
8GB 288P 1RX8 PC4-19200-2400T ECC UDIMM
Which is surprising, since I thought the 2400 was supposed to be non-ECC.

Wait, are you saying that's the RAM that came in the system, or did you add that to your order separately? I'll check the sticks that came with the two I ordered when I get to work.
Ours definitely is, but I'm remote from the box so am only getting this information indirectly. In our case, the BIOS reads 2133MHz for the memory speed, which matches the top spec for the CPU, as someone pointed out above. But the RAM is the Hynix HMA81GU7AFR8N-UH (according to the Intel AMT screen on the system), which is capable of PC4-2400 (the CPU limits it) and is most definitely [skhynix.com] ECC.
It would seem that Dell has a variety of suppliers. Yours might be something else entirely, but I think they have to be consistent about it being ECC or not.

And I just ordered two 16GB sticks of ECC RAM yesterday! :/
EDIT: Whoever won that eBay auction just picked up 8GB of Micron ECC RAM for just $28!
