Skydrive was, again, a legal issue. They were sued by the British TV broadcaster Sky, who was protecting their trademark. What other option should Microsoft have gone with? Fight the lawsuit, potentially lose hundreds of millions in a verdict and still be ordered to change it anyway?
This is also what happens to you when things start to get popular and get attention as you roll it out in new places. People come out of the woodwork to sue you because you have big pockets. Ie Microsoft having to change SkyDrive to OneDrive and Metro design to Modern design.

I'll be watching anyway so free stuff is always nice, even if I don't own the games they'll give away DLC for.

Might let it stream in the background for free stuff. Thanks.

Also, Microsoft is stupid. Mixer is Beam, which they bought and people were finally recognizing what that was, so what does Microsoft do? They change the name.

Whatever, it still highlight corporate incompetence, same situation with skydrive and Nokia. Microsoft is constantly building brand recognition and then throwing it away for whatever the reason may be.

If they're going to announce the mystery digital freebies during the conference then it must be worth it.

You didn't even mention it'll also be in 4K which is reason enough to watch it this way for me.

The service was named "Beam" when they purchased it. It then had to be changed, as it was a copywrite issue.
