Will the coupon code work on the 16GB version?

Thanks for posting this- I've been waiting for a deal on this NAS and the cashback option tipped me over the edge to go ahead and pick it up. Now off to seek out hard drive deals

Forget what I said. RMN is a SD competitor and you are not to use their site to save money. Or else...

DAMN. This is a dilemma. I've got an older DS1812+ with a DX513 expansion running and it's become dreadfully slow over the past few months especially with regards to Plex and any other applications that I attempt to run on it. If I knew that I could sell my DS1812+ off for a decent price, I think that I'd upgrade to this.

I honestly don't even need any of the new features in the DS1817+ vs the DS1815+ model seeing as they have the same processor, but it's not like there are any deals for the DS1815+ out there anyway even on eBay (for new, used, or anything in between). However, the upgraded processor alone would be a welcome addition for me (from my DS1812+).

Looks like I have 11 hours or so to decide...

FYI, these seem to still have the Intel Atom processors that have the bug where the processor fails early, as talked about here: https://forum.synology.com/enu/vi...&start=585

Does this unit have issues with the Atom processor that have occurred with other Synology units?

Cheap NAS drives have been popping up here and there too, for anyone looking to start from scratch.

Not thread dumping, but sharing my experience. My first NAS was a Synology 213. Worked for a basic NAS. The web interface on it was pretty, but very laggy and slow. I just figured this is how NAS's operate.

Then I got a QNAP 431. It was night and day. I ended up giving it to my brother since he needed one for his Blue Iris server.

Recently the Q451+ came up for $340 (IIRC). Wanting to move PLEX to a NAS and turn off my PC every now and then, I bit.

What a dream. It is instant. It reads/writes at 100-110MB/s (best I can get out of the Synology is 40-60MB/s). and it pushes 3-4 concurrent transcoded streams on Plex. Granted CPU is pegged at 99%, but it doesn't skip a beat on the client side.

Again, maybe this unit is better than the 213j I have, but seeing how well the QNAP works (in my case), I would not give Synology another go.

Ok. I bit on this. Under most circumstances I'd probably go in another direction by building my own NAS server, but since I'm already running on my current setup with a DS1812+/DX513 with 13 drives, this might be the best option for me.

I don't have the time to deal with setting up a DIY server and my RAID volume is a bit of mish-mash of drives of different sizes (although I'm adding in 4-5 new WD 10TB Reds as we speak that I got an amazing deal on) so I have to stick with SHR for the moment unless I want to rebuild. I know that there are some setups/hacks out there to get SHR on your own server setup, but it seems like a lot of trouble for something that I have limited time to deal with due to school for at least the next year.

This will basically allow me to keep my entire current SHR-2 Volume intact along with all my current settings and features, while upgrading the processor and some of the other internal things. I've been kind of eyeing the prices for the DS1815+ and DS2415+ for a couple months but deals just do not show up. With this, I get it $30 under MSRP, add in the $30 cash back from RetailMeNot, and avoid tax while getting it from a reputable dealer (aka don't risk it with eBay).

I'm still not 100% sure that it's worth the money to upgrade, as a lot of it depends on how much I can get for selling my DS1812+. Worst case scenario, I'll return or cancel the order.

I'm loving my DS916+8Gb, and I really want to move to an 8-bay, but that 2Gb kills it for me.

I host 4K media files and push them to Infuse Pro on my Apple TV, so transcoding isn't really needed, but 2Gb probably won't cut it moving 4K content.

I actually prefer this 2GB setup because I'm going to upgrade it to the 16GB max once I get it anyway. I wouldn't have to spend a $100 premium (or whatever it is) on the 8GB version (with two separate 4GB chips) that I'm just going to remove. I can just go straight to this [newegg.com] or something similar in the $100-130 range.
